    The Honeymoon Phase

    It is usually the same story. More often than not, you came to Hawaii on a vacation or honeymoon and instantly fell in love; the weather is ideal and island life is slow and relaxing. It is easy to imagine yourself living there without a care in the world. I do not blame you. I visited Hawaii several times on both Oahu and Maui prior to moving, and I was immediately smitten. I am a scuba diver who grew up on the mainland so I can appreciate the year-round 80 degree weather, lush tropical landscapes, and mild humidity. Believe me, no one wanted to live on an island and live that dream more than I did, so when I was offered a job on Oahu, I was ecstatic.

    Initially I thought it was a joke. I had been doing an extensive job search sending resumes to several states across the nation with no luck. When I first saw the advertisement for the job in Hawaii, I laughed to myself and thought it was more than just a long shot. But what the heck, I might as well send the resume. Of course, that was the one that stuck and six months later, I was on my way to Oahu with my family and two dogs in tow.

    After living on Oahu for a few years, I decided to write this book because I quickly learned that there were many things that greatly differed on the islands from that of
