The Receptor Planet

About this ebook
Ron Barr was an ordinary guy, living a mundane and ordinary life – he was happy with that life and expected, nor wanted, any more from his existence. He had a loving wife, and two beautiful children, they were the very apple of his eye.
That all changed one night in Bonita Springs, Florida. Ron was (kidnapped) swept away to another world – a place he called the RECEPTOR planet. What he found and experienced there changed his life forever.
I am but the lowly chronicler of these events – nothing more. I would like to say what I have written is a masterpiece, but no – it is not
I have never been one to totally believe the stories I have heard and read through the years concerning UFO's, sightings and abductions. Of course, I was never one to discount them either. I guess, you could best describe me as indifferent to the universal question.
I always considered it small-minded of the inhabitants of our world, to believe in an almighty power, one who is capable of creating the universe; yet limited in his capacity to create life on only ONE of the millions of planets.
If he IS omnipotent, then surely he has the power to create many inhabited worlds, throughout the infinity of the heavens. Perhaps they are similar to us, perhaps not. Whether there would be any intergalactic contact permitted between these domains I do not pretend to know.
As you can see, I have given these possibilities much thought and consideration. So, in conclusion, I like to think that I was, as most of you are; a doubter, but not a disbeliever.
I scoffed at many reports, taking most stories with tongue in cheek and raised eyebrows. Every once in a while, I would seriously consider the possibilities of the existence of alien life, not necessarily little green men, or tiny little creatures with bulging eyes and large heads, but alien inhabitants of other worlds.
Now with this dissertation complete and your understanding that I am not, nor was I then, a dedicated follower or a crazed UFO enthusiast, I tell you my story, such as it is, beginning to end, the mundane, coupled with the remarkable, leaving nothing out.
Sit back, relax, read this narration, such as it is, and consider this; what if you do have a counterpart, on another planet? He or she, looks, acts, speaks and is a true replica of you in every sense. Think a moment about that, what if?
I tell you, it still unnerves me...

I told Lisa in the spring of 1998 that I would love to write a Science Fiction Story. Of course her answer was: Then do it. If that is what you have been wanting to do, don't talk about it - just sit down and write it.
That is either a lot of confidence in my writing, or a challenge, I suppose it is both.
Lisa was leaving that week for a visit with her parents in Decatur, Tennessee. I could not go, I was committed to another project, but I made up my mind that I would have an outline completed by the time she came back, six days later.
I sat down and something took over my computer, my fingers and my thought process. I must have written for four or five hours that first day. I was sure, once I walked away, the muse who had taken control would balk at returning quickly to the process.
I was wrong. I was also working during this time, and had a limited number of hours per day to write. The problem was, once I started, I could not easily stop the process. I found myself writing deep into the night. It did return the next day, and the following and the day after. I looked up, and at four days, I had a three hundred fifty page manuscript.
The book was essentially complete. I edited it the last day, and read it again, to be sure there were no major mistakes.
Usually, once we complete a manuscript, Lisa will do the initial edit, then I will do a second edit and then she follows with the final. That way, we catch the most innocent of blunders, characters doing something out of character, or geographical miscues that would make us look ignorant of our story's geography.
I remember she pulled into the driveway and I went out to greet her. The first thing she asked was: did you get the outline completed on the Science Fiction thing?
I broke into a big smile and nodded my head. Oh yea, I did that.
Once inside the house I handed her the manuscript, All it needs is edited, and we have a book.
You're kidding me . . ."
It was the damnedest thing,
I related to her how it took control of me and I could not quit.
That is crazy,
she said seriously, a story that wrote itself.
Well, it didn't type itself . . .
Lisa started reading it that evening - she handed it to me the following morning.
I'm not sure we should change any of it,
she said, I mean, it is a really good story. Yes, it may be a little far fetched in some areas, but it is science fiction, it's supposed to be far-fetched.
The only changes we did make, were spelling errors, misidentified locations, and proper form, it remains as it was originally written, and we are proud of it.
All we can ask is that you read with the thought that it is science fiction, it is a bit far out, but the characters and story are dead on.
I did not base any of these characters on anyone living or dead, but I did use the location of Bonita Springs, Florida - I actually did live there, and I did work at the Bonita Springs Water System.
We do hope that you enjoy the book as much we enjoyed writing it. It turns out to be quite an adventure, one that you can easily get caught up in and leave this pressure filled existence. You get to journey to a strange - yet familiar planet - and discover new ideas.
Please don't forget to look up our other books: Jingle Bell Rock, Murder at 1217, and The Topanginu Warrior.
E-mail or write to us and share your thoughts on any of them.

The story you are about to read is a remarkable tale, unbelievable, yet true nonetheless. I was well aware that no one would believe me when I related the experience . . . and I hesitate to tell it . . . but tell it I must.

Ron?
a voice called out of the darkness. It was almost a whisper, like the wind only softer, if such a thing is possible.
I turned immediately and could see no one. A cold chill raced up and down my spine. I felt my hands tremble as I tightly gripped the iron railing.
Ron?
again it called out, in a firmer tone.
Who is that?
I said as I stiffened my body, the voice sounded vaguely familiar, which made it more eerie.
I want to talk to you,
the voice was clear now, after a few tense moments, I finally made out the shadow of a man standing at the far end of the walkway. He was effectively blocking my only avenue of escape.
How ya doin'?
I tried to sound calm even though my insides were churning. I kept trying to convince myself that I knew whoever it was, they evidently knew me.
Don't be afraid,
the voice said calmly, as the shadow came nearer.
Still I could not quite make out the features of the man, although, I could see his well defined outline against the glow of the distant security lights.
I must admit, with all candor - that I was afraid, fear had quickly taken hold of my being. Of course I wasn't about to let him know that I WAS scared shitless. Hell no! I figured I could take whoever it was; the shadow seemed about my size. So . . . I mentally prepared for combat. I already knew where I would hit him and how he'd fall. I had fought many battles as a youth and a young man in Viet Nam, this was just another match. I released my grip on the rail and balled up my fists as I changed my stance of fear into one of strength, I was prepared for this confrontation.
I'm not afraid,
I answered in my gruffest voice, . . . of you or anybody else . . . Now . . . what the hell do you want?
I just want to talk to you,
he replied calmly. I DID recognize that voice, I was sure it was someone I knew well, my mind was working at a frenzied pace trying to put a face with it.
It was then that he stepped out of the darkness and into the shadowy light, I froze in my tracks. I was not prepared for what stood before me. I could not speak, terror totally overwhelmed my being. I was at long last truly afraid. Cold chills throbbed from my spine and quickly enveloped my whole body.
Take it easy,
he said
