Chapter 1 - Great Forest [toc]
Just how old Big Tree is nobody knows. Her trunk is tenfold the girth of any other tree around; besides, all the other trees that make up the forest are her children anyway. All that the others know is that Big Tree has always been there at the center of the forest, taller, stronger and wiser than any other living thing on Earth. And that is also where one could find Raven, sitting on one of the lower branches of Big Tree, though sometimes they would see her at the top.
All the creatures round and about, including the rabbits, snakes, porcupines, bears, foxes, eagles and owls, especially the owls, think that Raven is almost as old as Big Tree herself and almost as wise for she had never been known not to be there with Big Tree. The other trees know that this isn't the case at all, of course, but in the manner of trees they say nothing!
Now, not many people know, but each tree shares its knowledge of something with all the other trees in the forest through their networking, which they do by using their extensive root system. What one tree knows the next knows also and so do the trees across the other
