I'm Michael, sometimes oatmeal, other times gravy. I'm 18, published two books, and run a company called EmpathyNYC. We find talented artists, help them up off the streets, and place them into studios, events, and videos to pursue the dream. Exposing their talents to the world, we give them a chance and a place in society. Basically, we're fricking awesome. I know I'm a writer, and that's not a word, but words are words, they're what you make them. You don't get many chances. If anything, they often come with a whole list of caveats that you're not always sure you could live up to, unless of course you're either very foolish or very brave. I try not to think of myself as brave, rather I see it like this, if they can do it, why can't I? All of my junior year I was seeing a number of unknown people go from nothing to stardom, and I wondered to myself, 'how was it possible?' I wanted it as much as they did, I grew up on welfare, lived in an apartment that was infested with rats, bugs, and dander with my three brothers, my sister, and my parents up until I was in High School. It was bad, but it gave me prospective. There were other people who had gone through the same experience, or who still was going through it and they needed help. When I did finally move, it wasn't a big change, but it did give me a productive environment to work in. I read more actively, became fit, took my classes seriously, and honed my writing, social-media, and business skills. In 2012, I took the next big step, and it was really more like a leap if anything. I had become interested in a number of social media outlets, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, you name it. Instagram and Tumblr, in particular were excellent outlets for me to get my work out, whether it was in photography, writing, or even some knowledge I had picked up on. I had begun to build my very own community, and I hadn't even known it. With a whooping thirteen thousand followers, there were a number of people looking forward to my next posts. I wasn't Mark Zuckerberg, and nor did I ever have any interest in making a network of any kind. I wanted to take what I had created, and turn it into an organization. So, on October, 2012, the unofficial brand, EmpathyNYC was born. We would take determined people who were talented in their field, whether it was art, music, or dance and give them a spotlight. The risks were raised to some power of a hundred. I assembled a team to work with me, some of which who had helped me publish a few of my books in the past, and others who were personal connections. I had artists, graphic designers, promoters, videographers, and more. We re-developed all the social media I had originally made to correlate our goals and expand our fan base. Then it began. Manufacturers failed to produce clothing for us, events didn't go as planned, and things moved slower than expected. It was stressful, exciting, and detrimental to my body all at the same time. I lost nights of sleep writing scripts for video shoots, planning events, and keeping the team together. I don't know if it's paid off yet, but I do intend to make my dreams a reality. The experience of starting EmpathyNYC, managing it, and expanding it gave me a vast array of new knowledge. I learned to work with social media on a professional level, how to create successful events, produce quality music videos, and more. It wasn't easy, but it was worth it. Every second of work that was placed into development made me stronger and more determined to create change. I took a leap of faith, and I plan to land smoothly from it. By 2014, I hope to have built something that stands on its own two feet, and give's others a walking cane and spotlight for support.

    Chapter 1

"All men's souls are immortal, but the souls of the righteous are immortal and divine,"- Socrates.

His eyes saw what they wished to see. Tricksters he called them, sometimes they manipulated the things around him and forced images and details that could not be there in a lifetime. They all called him crazy, a nutcase, and a full blown lunatic who shouldn’t walk the streets of Brooklyn. They said the things he saw didn’t exist, it was impossible for a man who walked with a long white cane and pitch black sunglasses to see anything in fact. But boy, were they wrong. Everything that he saw was real and although it was true that he walked without the same gift that the rest of man did, he always had the upper hand. It wasn’t always like that. He used to be just like them after all. He lived, he breathed, he saw, and did all the normal things that normal people typically did and only worried about normal people problems. But after fourteen years of that, everything changed. He would have never believed that a ride to Auntie’s in Sheepshead could go so wrong.

It was half past four and the wheels of the Q train were rattling down their rails, pushing and sliding, carrying the people inside, and onward to their destinations. The beaming lights of the approaching stops all lit up across the train and the familiar stern voice spoke over the intercom, Ladies and Gentlemen, this is an important message from the New York City Police Department. Keep your belongings in sight at all times. Protect yourself. If you see a suspicious package or activity on the platform or train, do not keep it to yourself. Tell a Police Officer or an MTA employee. Remain alert and have a safe day.

Ma how many stops till we reach aunties? he said.

Her cyan-green eyes looked down and her brow furrowed. Gray knew the expression by heart and could tell what was coming.

Gray how many times do I have to tell you? 18 more stops, you can see them right there for god’s sake, she exclaimed and pointed to the long list of stops on a lit-up panel overhead. "Now please leave me alone, I have to prepare myself. The meeting’s tomorrow and I
