About this ebook

He Will Come Again is a thoroughly modernized revision of the Victorian classic, He Will Come, by Stephen H. Tyng Jr. D.D.. Tyng's systematic eschatology is now an easy to read end-times study that will strengthen and encourage anyone who earnestly awaits the return of our Lord Jesus Christ.

We are strengthened with hope when we trust in the promised return of the Lord Jesus Christ. He said, "I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also" (John 14: 2-3).

Here is irrefutable scriptural support for a Dispensational, Pre-Millennial and Pre-Tribulation Rapture theology. Tyng expresses the glorious appearing of Jesus Christ as truly glorious. It is to our great misfortune that this tone is rarely preached in American pulpits today. Tyng reminds us of the glorious majesty that is our God and Savior Jesus Christ.

I took on the task to modernize this book simply to ensure that it would be preserved to encourage another generation to live in the light of the truth and the hope of our Lord’s return. The original Victorian English, though very beautiful, is grammatically archaic, and will often bog down the modern reader. I applied many of the same translation rules used by those who modernized the Old King James Bible. Particular care was taken to consider each line, so as to retain Tyng’s intended meaning. The original third person pronouns were changed to either first person plural or second person singular depending upon the context. This created a more modern and intimate rendering that better expresses Tyng’s intention for this to be a book of “Meditations Upon The Return Of The Lord Jesus Christ To Reign Over The Earth.”

    Preface

In my grandmother’s basement was an old barrister bookcase that was valiantly trying to defend its occupants from the destructive New England damp. Therein was a small green canvas book, simply titled "He Will Come." Though humbly clad, it stood confidently among the more prestigious books attired in sophisticated maroon leather. Raising the glass door, I was greeted by the musty yet nostalgic aroma of old books. I closed my eyes for just a moment to enjoy the gentle rush of memories that seemed to envelope me like one of my Grandmother’s hugs. My Grammy Nelson loved books and she taught me to love books, but more importantly, she taught me to love Jesus.

This well-worn book showed evidence of having been read many times. It had been somebody’s favorite book. Like an old friend, this book spoke the truth and gave hope of better days to come. The inside cover was inscribed by John W. Fuller on April 15, 1880. Great-Great Grampy Fuller had jotted down various notations and underscored several texts of personal interest and conviction.

John Fuller had lived through the hard and uncertain times of the Civil War and the First World War. He had seen his share of famines, pestilences and earthquakes in various places. John had given this book to my grandmother during the Great Depression when my young grandparents and their sickly child came to live with his family. John knew all too well that every generation must endure the tribulations of their time.

My Grandmother possessed a strength that was paradoxical to her outward frame and a quiet hope that seemed to emanate from within. In this book I discovered the secret. We are strengthened with hope when we trust in the promised return of the Lord Jesus Christ. He said, I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also (John 14: 2-3).

The original Victorian classic, He Will Come, by Stephen H. Tyng Jr. D.D. was a systematic interpretation and explanation of return of the Lord Jesus Christ. This created a more modern and intimate rendering that better expresses Tyng’s intention for this to be a book of "Meditations Upon The Return Of The Lord Jesus Christ To Reign Over The Earth."

He Will Come Again, uses Tyng’s theological support to provide the reader with a clear chronological end-times study. This book is for anyone who earnestly awaits the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. Let us journey through the successive stages of a believer’s glorified experience: From the rapture of the church, we will travel to the marriage supper of the Lamb; we return with Christ to the earth as His Bride to rule and reign with Him in His Millennial Kingdom, and then we will behold the final judgment.

I want to thank my wife Lademma for her continuous love and support, without which I could do nothing. To Pastor Brian Nixon, thank you for your guidance and encouragement throughout this project.

    Chapter 1: The Two Advents

For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ. (Titus 2:11-13)

For many churches, Advent is the first Sunday of the ecclesiastical year. It records and prophesies the coming of Christ Jesus the Savior and King into a world that He has redeemed and over which He will reign. Between these two appearings of the same person, we are passing our lives of privilege and responsibility. The grace that brings salvation is an inalienable possession of every believer. The glorious appearing is the coming sunrise that we, as watchers in the night, are waiting and looking.

Your life is preserved and protected under the double and commingled shadow of a cross and a throne. Your sins are covered by the first, and your infirmities and shortcoming are compensated by the second. Absolute salvation is your assurance. You have already been judged in the dying of the Lord Jesus. Now once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself (Hebrews 9:26). With delight, you desire the promised second coming of your Judge and King. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation (Hebrews 9:28). The intervening or succeeding judgment has for you no terrors. There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

Advent testifies to Jesus Christ. He is the first. He is the beginning of the creation of God. He is the firstborn among many brethren. He is the source of all grace. He is the author and finisher of our faith. He is the chief among ten thousand, the one altogether lovely. He is the first and the last, the all and in all. To His coming in the weakness of the flesh, all profane history looked forward for its date. Julius Caesar lived so many years before Christ, yet every calendar of later generations confesses the Annum Domini - the year of the Lord - as the initial point of all its calculations. This is Christ’s place in the history of the world. His coming to die was the long deferred anticipation of the Jewish Nation. Many like aged Simeon waited for the consolation of Israel and then sang their song of departure. Their confidence found its divinely appointed justification that day at Bethlehem. In the birth of Jesus all faith, from Abel’s to Simeon’s, was centered and glorified.

Our present faith is retrospective. It recognizes that the first coming of Jesus Christ is a historical fact. In this advent are bound all of the promises and privileges that the believer can aspire or attain. All generations since the beginning of the Christian era have drawn all their love, joy, peace and inspiration from that first manifestation of Jesus Christ. Therefore the church places this singular event before every doctrine, before every act of discipline, before all reminders of privilege and duty, even before the marvels of the Holy Spirit. This is the event of events, so the voice of the church is, ‘Let Advent be the leader of the festivals.’

    The First Advent

For the Son of Man has come to seek and save that which was lost. (Luke 19:10)

The first coming of Jesus Christ is the assurance for our faith, the reason of our hope, and the inspiration of our love. Like a traveler, you climb the mountain and extend your horizon. While the inhabitants of the valley are in darkness, you are welcoming the sun. Your face is already glistening with the glory of a new day. The air that you breathe is full of life. You sing for joy over the deliverance from night and the earnest of the perfect day that you receive with the dawn.

By faith, you dwell in the high places of a finished salvation through the birth, obedience, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus of Nazareth. Too many Christians are content with the shadow of the cross. This is indeed a great benefit; however, there is more than this in the sacrifice of our Savior. It may become to us an observatory. Stand firmly on it, and see how the shades of darkness and doubt are growing thinner as the day of the Lord is at hand. Praise the Christ of the past! Proclaim the coming Christ!

    The Second Advent

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. (John 14:3)

The Advent season is also a reminder of the equally important fact that our Lord Jesus Christ will return to this earth. His second visit holds precisely the same relationship to the culminating events of His kingdom, as did His first coming to the work of His redemption. The fulfilled prophecy of His first coming testifies and validates the testimony of Jesus" (Revelation 19:10). From that coming, all privileges in the millennial kingdom and the ages beyond derive their brightness and power.

Even in the church, the literal language of God’s Word is under attack by the frivolous objections of man’s doubting unbelief, the false and intrusive interpretations of prophecies. They would try to predict the day of His coming and thus divert the minds of the faithful from the Word of God. In contradiction of all these opposing influences, we must boldly proclaim our testimony to the second coming of Jesus Christ.

In creed, we profess: He will come again.

In the constitution of the seasons, we declare that we: look for the Lord, that blessed hope.

In the congregation, we pray that: at Your second coming to judge the world may we be found an acceptable people in Your sight.

In article, we testify that: He ascended into heaven, and there sits until He returns to judge all men at the last day.

There is no question about the doctrine of the church on the second advent of Jesus Christ.

    The Application

What manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness? (2 Peter 3:11)

Yet how few among us are like those that wait for their master, when He will return from the wedding; that when He comes and knocks we may open to Him immediately (Luke 12:36). It is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand (Romans 13:11). Christian character has lost its robustness and soundness. The church and the world are in too close communion. Light is seeking agreement with darkness. Wickedness is fawning before and flattering Christ. It was not so in the early churches. It is not so today, if we like the Thessalonians, wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come (1 Thessalonians 1:10). It will not be so for you, if you search the scriptures for the certainty and signs of His appearing. You will receive precious guidance and inspiration when you look ahead through the lens of the Word to your coronation with Christ.

Make time to talk to your coming Lord about these promises and you will receive new assurance of
