CHAPTER

1

HANNY BIELER

Hanny Bieler is a stunningly gorgeous girl. Beautiful caramel skin tone, big brown eyes and high cheek bones, she often attracted curious glances from adults, as well as children.

Born at the well-known Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, West London, to a super wealthy couple, her exotic genes were as a result of her bi-racial origin - A White Austrian father and, an Afro-British mother!

Her father, a wealthy Banker, and her mother, a top Journalist for the BBC, both travelled the world frequently, leaving Hanny behind in London with her Nanny, Pamela!

The family lived in an affluent neighborhood in Hampstead, London.

Hanny wanted for nothing, materially. With a Nanny to take care of her, a Chauffer to drive her wherever she wants to go, and, a housekeeper to take care of her needs at home - beautiful home, nice clothes, foreign holidays. But what she wanted most of all, was for her parents to be home with her, to take care of her, like her friend - Angela’ parents!

Conversely, all wasn’t too bad. She was happy to have Nanny Pamela as her surrogate mother. Nanny was her comforter when she misses her parents. Nanny is the person who takes her out shopping, listens to her stories about boys, and read her bedtime stories.

Apart from her one friend Angela, Hanny didn’t have any other friends her age.

Angela, who was two years older than Hanny, lived just a couple of houses away, in her neighborhood. They had many things in common and one such thing was that they were both bi-lingual; both girls spoke English and German.

Angela’ Parents are Germans - her father, a Doctor, and her mother, a renowned Estate Agent.

These two were just typical little girls who spend a lot of time playing, speaking German often and, having fits of giggles over silly things.

Hanny’s Mum, Karina Bieler, grew up in foster homes, hence, didn’t have any family, except for Aunt Shelly who was her adopted sister. Her father, Stefan, on the other hand, grew up in a loving family, in Austria, where his family still resides!

Although, both Stefan and Karina were away from their little girl often, however, when they’re home, Hanny was their top priority, and was showered with lots of love and gifts – perhaps, out of guilt.

One rare evening when her Parents were home, Hanny heard her Mum screaming at her father, then the sound of her father slamming the door and hurriedly scuttling downstairs to his car, before driving off furiously!

She jumped out of her bed, gazed worryingly at Nanny Pamela, who caressed her face lovingly as if to comfort her,

Come here, Hanny. Come here darling!

Hanny walked into Nanny Pamela’s open arms and hugged her tightly.

Why are my Mum and Dad yelling, and why do you look so sad?

I’m not sad, darling, Nanny responded, shrugged, and pecked Hanny on the forehead!

Nanny let out a sigh of frustration, then composed herself before saying tersely:

All right then, little madam, it’s bedtime for you. She said, before turning off the lights off, and shutting the door behind her!

Hanny lay in bed unable to sleep, she turned, and tossed but her thoughts wouldn’t allow sleep to take over her! She wondered if her mother was alright, and where her father dashed off to!

When she couldn’t sleep, she got up from her bed, tiptoed out of her bedroom, towards her Parent’ bedroom. She listened through the door, for any noise. She could hear soft sobs coming from her mother. She opened the door briskly, and ran into the bedroom, to see her mother lying on the floor, sobbing!

Mummy! Mummy! She yelled out. Running towards her mother to snuggle up to her!

What’s the matter, Mummy,

Where did Daddy go? Hanny bombarded her mother with questions!

I don’t know…sweetheart. Karina retorted, holding her daughter tightly.

Poor, sweet, Hanny tried to wipe her mother’s tears away through her sniffles. They held on to one another until they both fell asleep – on the floor!

They were both soundly asleep when Hanny felt strong arms lifting her off the floor!

It was her father! Hanny smiled happily, elated that he was back home. But it was already morning!

Hello, my Princess. He lifted her up and hugged her, then went over to his wife, and held his wife’s hand!

Hello Daddy! Where were you? She asked!

I was downstairs in the office! Go and get in the shower and come down for breakfast. Go on, darling! Stefan urged!

Stefan gave his daughter a loving gaze. He felt so horrible, like a bad parent. He knows enough about his daughter to know how devastated she would be when she finds out the secret, they’ve been keeping from her!

He was being transferred to Germany and, Karina was also going to be travelling around the world, working with the BBC so, she’s decided that in order to give their daughter a great start in life, it would be best if Hanny were to attend a Boarding School in Cambridge – not even in London, but in Cambridge. Stefan was initially, absolutely against the idea, he gave in just to placate his headstrong wife!

So, at only six years old, Hanny would be attending school at one of the most esteemed, highly recommended, and prestigious Boarding Schools in Cambridge!

Holidays would be spent with her parents in Germany, and they, along with Pamela would visit her often. Stefan shivered knowing that he would have to break the news to his only child, and pondered on how to start the conversation, knowing Hanny would react poorly to the news!

As expected, Hanny threw a massive tantrum when it was announced that she would be attending a Boarding School and would be away from home!

"Please Mummy,

Please Daddy,

Please don’t send me to a Boarding School!

I don’t want to go to a Boarding School.

I want to stay here with Nanny, and with you.

Stefan got up and scooped his darling little daughter into his arms.

I’m so sorry, darling. You’ll be fine! I promise! Nanny will visit often, and you’ll visit us in Berlin during your holidays. Mummy and I will also visit you often! It’s only for a few years and you will be with your age mates, you’ll have fun there! Stefan said, trying to console Hanny!

Karina walked over to Stefan, held her daughter and wiped away her tears. She feels guilty that she had come up with this idea!

Hanny will never forgive her when she finds out it was her idea to send her away. Although, she loves her daughter very much, but sometimes feels encumbered with a young child.

Besides, a prestigious Boarding School would boost her chance of a future successful career!

She loves Hanny! Lord knows she does, but she’s hardly the Mother of the Year. Karina didn’t plan to ever have a child – it just happened - Pregnancy came to her as a surprise, and she never thought that she, of all people, would ever have her own family. Maybe she subconsciously spends very little time with her daughter, because of her own horrible childhood, in foster homes!

I’m so sorry darling! Karina whispered, as she caressed her daughter’s face.

With everyone fawning over Hanny, she eventually stopped crying, walked over to her Nanny, pulled her hand, and led her to the garden.

Why don’t Mummy and Daddy like to be around me, Nanny?

"Oh, my love, of course they love being around you. They love you very much. They just have to work very hard, so they can give you a good life. Besides, it’s going to be fun for you. Just think, you’ll be with a group of girls your age – and boys too - you can gossip, do all sorts of fun things which kids your age love to do. And, I promise you my love, I will not be too far away from you! Nanny assured her, tipping her face up, to wipe the tears away.

Nanny Pamela has worked for the Bielers since Hanny was born. She knows Hanny more than her parents do. What a delightful young child she is!

Why would they want to send this lovely child away? She wondered! Especially at such a young age! Nanny couldn’t understand why the Bielers couldn’t have just left young Hanny with her, here in London!

Boarding Schools are no easy feats. Being away from your home, family, and familiar territory, to a place utterly strange could turn out to be a traumatic experience for a girl like Hanny!

With no comfort of home, watchful eyes of Nanny Pamela, and the Bielers, Hanny would be on her own with no family at the School, and, be forced to fend for herself.

She would have to be independent and tough!

Pamela is quiet familiar with kids who grew up in Boarding Schools because she had helped raise many kids of wealthy parents. These kids often felt abandoned by their parents which caused them to be angry and unforgiving adults!

What a special child Hanny is. A beautiful child who deserves the presence and full attention of her parents!

Pamela didn’t like this idea at all. She was familiar with kids as young as three years old, sent to Boarding School who didn’t turn out well in life - but hopefully, Hanny’s experience will be different!

Pamela loved her like her own! She had taken care of Hanny since she was born, and, cares deeply for this child! She and Hanny were very close. So, when the Bielers first mentioned the plans to send her to Boarding School, she was shocked to say the least - then she was angry! She begged them, but, Mrs. Bieler was unyielding.

Her mind was already made up!

How could they send this precious child away?

Poor Hanny!

She would now be forced to grow up at the tender age of six years old, and, be forced to be self-reliant. How would she possibly cope with being away from home?

Nanny was worried! She was very worried indeed! Her experience with other kids she nannied in the past, who attended Boarding schools at a tender age, reminded her of how some of their teachers, and, Caretakers had sexually and emotionally abused those kids, despite their priviledged background!

Pamela knows that no amount of impersonal contact by phone calls or emails can make up for the lack of personal interaction with their families.

The infrequent visits will not alleviate a child’s pain at not having their parents close by.

How would she fare? She wondered! Poor Hanny! What if she’s bullied? She thought!

Pamela couldn’t bear the thought of this child being sent away! She would miss her dearly!

She sat there with a frown on her face, watching Hanny as she fell asleep in her arms, in the garden!

Her thoughts went to her own past, and she let out a sigh, with tears streaming down her face, until her thoughts were interjected by the presence of Mr. & Mrs. Bieler!

"Is she sleeping?

Pamela nodded!

Stefan picked Hanny up, and, carried her to her bedroom. Pamela followed so she could be there when Hanny wakes up!

No-one else understands Hanny like Pamela does. The poor child is hurting!

Weeks went by since the big announcement of Hanny’ impending trip to Cambridge. She seems to be taking everything in her stride and has even come to embrace the idea of Boarding School once Pamela showed her positive stories about Boarding Schools, online. She asked questions of course, and, wanted to be sure that she can take some of her dolls with her!

Is this going to be my new school, Nanny?

Pamela saw a smile at the corner of Hanny’s mouth; Finally – she thought!
