    BIGFOOT’S

    RIVER OF NO RETURN

    The Killing

    Hi, it's me,

Good to hear your voice. What you doing?

Coming to town tomorrow, Can you meet me for breakfast?

    Sure, about eight, Coffee Shop.

See ya then. I've got something very important to ask.

January in Salmon, Idaho is cold. Temperatures below zero last for days. Most people stay indoors. A few hardy souls venture out, going to town for groceries, a movie, or just walking Main Street to catch-up on the gossip. A favorite hangout of some is the Salmon River Coffee Shop. Located on Main Street, it is a warm cozy place to get good food and hot coffee. Some of the locals call it their home away from home. On a sub-zero day in January 1953, the coffee shop was almost deserted. Most of the residents could not get their cars started, or pipes thawed.

John Huston, about 30, sat at the counter, staring into his half empty cup. John, a tall thin man, with gangly arms came to town on a mission. A ranch hand with large blue eyes, thinning blond hair, wearing a constant smile, and a tattered old black cowboy hat, he had come to town from Tendoy, to get some groceries, visit with friends, and ask a very important question. John sat stirring his coffee; his back hunched, his hat pulled over his eyes, and a sly little smile escaped his lips. Waitress Ella was working behind the counter.

Want a refill John? asked Ella.

Nope, not now, I'm waiting for Anitia, laughed John. Anyone else in today?

You’re the only one stupid enough to be out and about. You gonna spend the night, or head home? Ella yelled from the kitchen.

Roads weren’t too bad this morning, but I'll answer your question when Anitia gets here.

Ella, a small woman, looked about 30. Her long black hair, worn in a bun, gave the impression of a schoolteacher. Her dark piercing brown eyes made most new comers take a second look. Her outgoing personality made them take a third and fourth look. She was excellent waitress. She was married. She worked almost every day, opening and sometimes closing. Her husband understood or so Ella thought. He suspected Ella was cheating, but she was not. Her bubbly personality and constant gift of gab contributed to his suspicions. A fine line exists between flirting and being a great waitress. Ella's tips were more than any other waitress, and the additional income was welcome.

The bell above the front door tinkled. Suddenly the door flung open. A large balding man, carrying a short-barreled shotgun, had to turn sidewise to get through the door. He shouted at John, Ella here?

In the kitchen, Byron; you been hunting? asked John

Have been and still am, yelled Byron, as he leveled the gun at John’s chest and pulled the trigger. The blast knocked John Huston backward, off the stool and onto the floor. Blood poured from his chest for a moment then stopped. His eyes became glassy, and his skin pale. John was dead. Ella came running out of the kitchen; saw John, screamed, then saw the man.

You! she screamed. What are you doing here? Why did you shoot John?

With steady fingers, Byron quickly reloaded the single shot. Ella did not hear the second shot. Small pellets ripped through her throat and chest, the wad severed her spine. Like John, death was immediate for Ella Straight. The man turned around, squeezed through the door, and stepped out into the cold. I’ll kill all of you! he yelled at the top of his lungs. The streets were empty, almost. He repeated this as he walked to the
