    Chapter 1

Charlie and Wyatt were sitting at the A&W having what was supposed to be a celebratory root beer float. The boys, along with their buddies Ling, Anna, Kolter, and Karter, had been desperately trying to save their after-school art program in the whirlwind of the first week of fifth grade. They had just received a dismal text from the school principal, Mrs. Williams.

    Mrs. Williams 2 AA (texting):

I hate 2 b the bearer of bad news but we missed the fundraising goal by $384. U all put forth great effort & im proud of each & every one of u. Sorry it had 2 end like this.

Everyone else had cleared out of the A&W after hearing the bad news, but Charlie and Wyatt stayed to drown their sorrows in ice cream. We came so stinking close! exclaimed Wyatt with a mouth full of ice cream. West Side brought in $400 with ‘Save the AA’ t-shirts, and $50 from Mr. Franklin for the robot Karter and Kolter built. East Side brought in $150 from their donation cans, and South Side raised $250 from their bake sale. Close but no cigar, added Charlie. Charlie’s phone suddenly chimed, as did Wyatt’s. It was Anna, the girl of Charlie’s dreams.

Anna 2 Charlie and Wyatt (texting):

U guys need to get ur butts back 2 school. Emergency mtg in Mrs. W’s office ASAP!

What the heck is that about? mumbled Wyatt through a huge bite of root beer drenched ice cream.

I don’t know, but we better get over there, replied Charlie. He’d do just about anything for Anna, even in the wake of a huge disappointment.

Wyatt could see the eager look on Charlie’s face and couldn’t resist. Easy, Loverboy! At least let me finish wallowing. I’m not done with my float yet!

After Wyatt shoveled in the remainder of his float, the boys scrambled onto their bikes and headed to West Side Elementary. When they arrived they saw several other familiar bikes parked out front. The pair headed inside to Mrs. Williams’ office.

Oh, thank goodness I caught all of you, exclaimed Mrs. Williams. "I just received a phone call from Dr. Jessen, a professor at the University of Wyoming, who attended your presentation earlier today while visiting his grandmother. He took pictures with his cell phone and texted your mission to his undergraduate art students.
