Prologue
Sitting here, as I make my first entry into my journal, let me introduce myself. My name is Landry Locker and I am eighteen years old. I am a senior at Vista High School in King Creek, Arizona. It has been a great school despite what happened two years ago. That event will never be forgotten. I think the students and faculty are beginning to move forward and for the seniors, the focus has shifted to their schoolwork and future plans for college.
I live with my parents on ten acres of land just outside of town. The land is surrounded by a tall fence but looks more like a wall. I mean, you can see through to the other side and all, but it has always seemed like overkill to me. We live in the middle of the property so we never really notice the tall fence much. We live there with twenty-four of our other family members in sort of a compound I guess you could call it. Yes, you read that correctly, twenty-four of us! Of course, we don’t all live in the same house—there are five houses in all. I live with my parents in one, probably the biggest one. In the other four, we have our assorted family members of uncles, aunts, and cousins, even poppa and nana. It sounds strange, but it’s all I’ve known growing up and once you get used to it, it’s really not all that bad. We are all very close.
My mom and dad run what they call, ‘the family business’. It’s located in the heart of Old Town King Creek. The business has been in our family for generations and it seems to support our family well. When I was younger, I thought it was the coolest thing to run around the store and explore all over, out the back door and into the alley. Every once in a while me and some of my cousins would climb the metal brackets on the drain pipe and use it as a ladder to
