    Fate - Amy Reeves

    Prologue

The sky above us, moments ago a vivid blue, was now pitch black. Large bolts of lightning flashed overhead, lighting up the sky. Thunder boomed, violently shaking the ground underneath. The wind whipped around us like a hurricane, violently bending the trees until the tops were touching the ground. I turned to face my love, and once again, my heart skipped-a-beat. Daniel stood tall and ready; a Warrior prepared for war.

Suddenly, a loud crash caught my attention. I turned to see where the noise came from, barely able to make out the five shadowy figures walking towards us. I mimicked Daniel’s stance, even though my heart was pounding in my chest. I stood tall and fierce, ready for whatever was about to come our way.

As the shadows came into view, I could make out Lucifer in the front, followed closely by Edmund, and three other people I didn’t recognize. A woman walked directly behind Lucifer, her long red hair danced in the wind as her piercing green eyes stayed locked on us. Her skin was so white she seemed to glow in the darkness. The other two men walked to the side of her. One, a tall and muscular man, with hair so blonde, it was almost white. I looked into his gray eyes, and instantly recognized the same evil that had once been in the eyes of Luke. He smiled at me and I turned my head, cold chills running up and down my arms.

My attention went to the guy that stood next to him. Although, he wasn’t quite as tall as the blond, he had a brooder build. He wore his chocolate-brown hair spiked and his honey-brown eyes looked sad; I wondered what he was doing here, he seemed to be out of place standing with such evil. They both had the same complexion as the redhead and there was something eerily familiar about them; I just couldn’t put my finger on what it was.

Lucifer came to a stop directly in front of me and smirked.

"I see you’re in between Daniel and my son. You seem to have a habit of getting in the middle of things; don’t you, Morgan? He asked, smiling widely at me. Daniel moved forward, but I gripped his hand tighter, forcing him to stay by my side.

Daniel looked over at me and whispered, I love you, before he gave Lucifer his full attention. I couldn’t help but wonder if this would be the last time I would see him. I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was going to happen to me, and I hated feeling like this would be the last time I would see my family, for a while at least.

You are my forever, my heart will always belong to you, I let float through my mind. He turned again, toward me, smiling that heart- stopping-smile before he lunged forward. His aim was directly at Lucifer, as I knew it would be all along. I didn’t have time to jump to his defense, not like he needed me to. The beautiful redhead glided toward me, until she came to a stop directly in front of my face, only a few inches kept us from touching. She smiled, showing her glistening white teeth.

Hello, Morgan. I am so very sorry that we had to meet this way. Please know that I have nothing personal against you; I am just doing my job, she said, before grabbing my hair and tossing me to the ground. She was on top of me before I even had a chance to get up. She had my arms pinned on either side of my head and I couldn’t budge her. She smiled again at me, only this time, I could make out what looked to be fangs. Holy shit! It now occurred to me why there had been something familiar about them. They were vampires.

Yes, sweet little Morgan, I am a vampire. I can see your mind racing to figure out how that can be, and to answer your question, I will say that someone has found a way to create us, without us going ape shit, and killing off every human we come in contact with, she said. Her green eyes were almost hypnotizing as she stared at me, her beauty astounding.

I knew now that I was dealing with something that scared the living daylights out of me, and I knew that they must be powerful if Lucifer had them here standing by his side, in our territory. He would only bring his strongest to fight us.

I tried to free myself from her grip, but I couldn’t budge her iron hold on my arms. Then I heard Daniel’s scream and everything I had inside of me came out. I let the electricity flow through my body, hitting my hands. I managed to grab the redhead’s arms, and the electricity flew violently into her. She looked at me before she rolled off and began convulsing on the ground. I knew that this wouldn’t kill her, but it would buy me enough time to find out what was wrong with Daniel.

I stood up and looked around. The lightning was coming down now, the sky staying aglow. I spotted Lucifer, and instantly, I knew why Daniel had screamed. Lucifer had his huge hand wrapped tightly around his throat, lifting him into the air. I could see Daniel’s face turning blue, and knew that I had to do something, quick. Before I could get to Daniel, Luke came out of nowhere and was trying to free him. Lucifer’s hand didn’t budge one bit, even when Luke hit him with everything he had.

You are strong, my son, but you are no match for me, Lucifer said as I approached. Anger soared through my body, and I felt the electricity building like it never had before. I made a split-minute decision to hit Daniel, instead of Lucifer, afraid that I wouldn’t be able to take him down. Daniel went flying through the air and landed with a thump at the edge of the cliff. I started to make my way toward him, but I didn’t get far before I felt someone’s huge arms go around my body, within an instant, I was floating in complete blackness.

    Chapter One

I was lost in a black oblivion. I was awake, but I couldn’t bring myself to open my eyes. Sweat beaded on my forehead and the heat, the heat was smoldering my lungs as I struggled to breathe the tiniest trickle of air. I knew where I was, so there was no need for me to see with my own eyes. The moment I was floating into the blackness, Lucifer had gotten what he had wanted. He had gotten not only Luke back, but he had gotten me as well. He had me in his kingdom now, and there was nothing I could do about it. I was in Hell.

Morgan, I know you’re awake. Please open your eyes. If I have to spend another moment locked in silence, I don’t know what I will do, Luke’s strained voice said. Of course Lucifer would put us together. I closed my eyes tighter and took a deep breath. The hot air burned my lungs as it cascaded through my body and I fought the urge to cough. My head was already pounding, like someone was beating a drum inside on the inside of it, and my body was aching.

Please, Morgan, Luke pleaded. A pang of guilt went through me as I thought about Luke trying to save Daniel. He had risked his life to save my love, and now he was in the one place he never wanted to be again.

I slowly opened my eyes before quickly shutting them; the brightness almost blinded me. I cocked one eye open and then slowly, the other, letting them adjust to the brightness around me. After they finally adjusted, I looked around to see where I had been placed. It brought back horrible memories of the time Luke had held me captive and the tiny cell he had kept me in, before I had finally broken, and ran into his arms. Although under a spell, I had still cared for Luke and I was glad that he had managed to save his life, but now I was scared for him. Lucifer was the devil and I knew what he was capable of.

I scooted myself up against the hot cement wall and looked over at Luke. He was sitting on a tiny mattress looking like a zombie. His jet-black hair was plastered to his head and his body was covered in bruises.

"Oh shit, what did they do to you? I asked with shock. His blue eyes looked cloudy and his lips pursed together tightly.

I guess I put up a bigger fight than my father thought I would, he replied with a smirk. I couldn’t help feeling sorry for him. After everything he had been through, I hoped that he could make it until we found some way out. I didn’t know how long it would take us, or even if we could, but I knew I would never stop trying.

I’m so sorry, Luke. I know that you were trying to save Daniel’s life and for that, I owe you big time. You made a huge sacrifice for someone you don’t even get along with and look where it got you. I can’t thank you enough for what you did.

I hoped and prayed that my family were okay. I had to think positive, even though I couldn’t feel Daniel’s connection. I had been trying since I had come to, but I couldn’t find, not even a hint of him. I knew that Lucifer could easily find a witch or wizard to cast a spell on our connection, so I tried not to let it bother me. He had to be okay and he had to take care of Bailey.

I’m not who I used to be and saving Daniel was the right thing to do. Lucifer was there for me and Daniel just got in the way, but you are the one that knocked him away. You are the one that truly saved his life and sacrificed yourself. I should apologize to you, Morgan; I am the reason you are here as well, Luke said sadly. His head fell down into his hands and I could see his body start to tremble. I forced myself to get up, on my wobbly legs, and made my way over to the small mattress, and sat down beside him.

Lucifer wanted me just as much as he did you, or should I say, he wanted us together. This is none of your fault and I will not let you blame yourself. We all knew that this could happen; this is what we do Luke, who we are. Don’t blame yourself. I knew what I was doing when I knocked Daniel out of the way and I wouldn’t change a thing. We can get through this, but we have to stay strong.

I believed every word that I said to him. Getting out of this place would be hard, I knew, but we were so much stronger together than we were apart. Luke looked up at me with somber eyes. I could see the fear he tried to hide underneath them. I wish that I could change this for him, that he didn’t have to face his father like this and in hell, of all places, but what was done, was done.

We are literally in Hell, Morgan; it’s going to be very hard to try to find a way out of this, he replied angrily. I wrapped my arm around his shoulders and laid my head against his arm.

I know, Luke, I know, I said. I was at a loss for words and wished, so desperately, to be anywhere but here.

Well, well, well… doesn’t this make quite the picture, Lucifer said, suddenly appearing at the cell bars. I looked up to see the devil himself dressed all in black. His raven black hair stood perfectly in place and his ice-blue eyes held nothing, but evil. He smiled widely at me, showing his snow white teeth and sending shivers down my body.

Edmund appeared moments later looking as disgusting as ever. His overly muscular body was adorned with an old ratty T-shirt and black holey pants. His black combat boots looked to be year’s old and his long black hair was greased to his head.

I thought I would be nice and allow you two to get cleaned up a bit and get some food. See, I’m not all bad now am I? He chimed. I looked up at him and crossed my arms. I didn’t know what he was up to, but I knew that it was not good.

I’d rather stay here and starve, than to be in the company of you, I shot out. He smiled at my comment and shook his head.

"I wouldn’t test me, Morgan, if I were you. I can leave you here to rot in your own feces if I want, but my son is in there and I am trying to be as civil as I can be. Don’t make me change my mind.

Edmund, you handcuff them together and take them to eat, Lucifer said before disappearing before my eyes. Luke’s body was still tense beside me, but he didn’t say anything, he just stood up and grabbed my hand, while Edmund unlocked the door by waving his hands. The man had been, almost, always silent, and from what I had come to know, he was nearly as good of a wizard as Kevin. He walked in the tiny space and over to Luke and I. He didn’t say anything; he just lifted our hands together and placed steel handcuffs on each of our wrist.

Out of all the people, I never once thought that you would betray me like this, Luke said to Edmund as he led us through a maze of doors. I looked around trying to see any sign of an escape. There was nothing that even remotely looked like it would get us out of here. All the doors were steel and just led to another room.

You were my closest confidant and here you are working with the damn devil himself. I can’t believe you would do this to me. I thought that you had decided to give up the evil shit when I did, but here you are and with me as your prisoner, Luke said.

I could feel Luke’s hand tremble, but he never let it show. Edmund didn’t respond he just kept leading us into different doors, until finally we entered what looked like a kitchen of sorts. There were three round wooden tables and chairs with a stainless steel stove and refrigerator. Edmund led us to the table closest to the stove and forced us to sit down.

I think we can manage to sit down by ourselves, Luke said as Edmund started to push us into the seats. Edmund didn’t reply, but his massive hand moved from the top of my head. Luke and I sat down in the wooden chair and waited as Edmund pulled stuff out of the refrigerator. I closed my eyes and tried to find Daniel’s connection again. And again there was nothing. Focusing on Kevin, I tried to pull up our connection. I thought that maybe since he was my protector, that something would be there, and again I was disappointed when there was nothing.

I snapped out of my thoughts when Edmund placed two plates on the table. I looked down to see that both plates held a sandwich, chips, and pickles. I thought that if I had both hands to eat with, it would be gone in a second. I picked up a chip and popped it into my mouth, while Edmund reappeared with two bottles of water. I ate as fast as I could, but it was hard with only one hand to do the work. By the time I had eaten everything on my plate, my stomach growled. It felt good to have something in it again and I was at least glad for that.

At least the asshole is feeding us. I didn’t think he would do that much, Luke snorted. Edmund appeared again and took hold of our cuffed hands, within a second; we were floating in the air. We landed on our feet moments later, in a dimly-lit bathroom. There were two showers standing side-by-side, towels and clothes had already been laid out at each one. I looked over at Edmund, who just stood there.

I don’t expect you to leave us, but could you at least turn around? I asked staring at him.

It was bad enough that I had to take a shower with two men in the room. He didn’t respond, but walked over to Luke and me. He un-cuffed both of us before he turned around, and walked over to where he had been standing. He had his back to us, but didn’t turn around; thankfully.

I won’t look, Luke said. He began pulling off his dirty shirt. I turned away, embarrassed that it took me a minute to do so.

Thanks, I said. I stripped off my clothes faster than I thought I could and jumped into the shower. I turned on the hot water not even bothering to touch the cold. My body was aching under the water but I tried to ignore the pain. I washed my hair and body before running the razor over my legs; I couldn’t stand the feel of hair on my legs at all. The water started to run cold, so I turned it off. I reached for the towel that I had hung on the rod and dried myself off, before wrapping it around my body and stepping out. Luke was already out of the shower and dressed with his back to me. I grabbed the pile of clothes and threw them on as fast as possible. It wasn’t until I had them on, that I noticed what had been laid out for me. A short denim skirt and a black tank top; go figure, I had worn this attire before.

Okay, I’m ready, I said joining Luke by his side. He looked much better now in his black T-shirt and dark jeans. The bruises were turning a yellowish-blue color, but looked much better than they had this morning. Edmund handcuffed our wrist together again and in a flash, we were floating in the darkness.

I will never get used to that feeling, I said, once Edmund had locked the cell and left. I still felt a little dazed from being zapped. Luke sat back down on the small mattress and motioned for me to join him. Since it was better than sitting on the hard concrete floor, I did. The mattress wasn’t big at all, maybe a twin size, so we were touching arms by the time I got down beside him. I leaned my head back against the block wall and closed my eyes. I couldn’t help but wonder if everyone on the island was okay. I didn’t know what happened after I had been taken and I worried about Bailey. She didn’t know what was going on and in a five-year-olds mind, who knew what she was thinking. I just hoped that Mary had comforted her.

What are you thinking so hard about? Luke asked. I could hear the concern in his voice. I let out the breath I had been holding and opened my eyes.

I just hope that everyone is okay. I worry about Bailey the most. She is just a little girl and shouldn’t have to face any of this. I did tell her, before all this happened, that I might have to go away for a while, but I miss her more than words can say.

I am so sorry, Morgan. I know that this has got to be the hardest thing for you, I mean being away from your daughter, he said sincerely.

I have never been away from her this long before and it breaks my heart, but I will find a way back to her, I will.

He took my hand in his, holding onto it tightly. I knew that he was trying to comfort me, so I didn’t move it away.

Luke… you’re familiar with this place, right? I asked in a hushed voice. He tilted his head to the side and looked at me.

Yeah, I basically grew up here. This is where the devil has his throne, this is Hell, Morgan. Why do you ask?

I bit my bottom lip and looked over at him. Is there any way out? I mean, like a door or elevator or something? I asked as my mind was ticking. He chuckled at my question. I looked at him quizzically, wondering what about my question, had been funny.

I’m sorry, but you just asked me if Hell had an elevator. I found that funny. I can tell you that the only known way out of here, is to be zapped. I remember as a little boy I would run around trying to find somewhere that lead to an exit, but there wasn’t any. Lucifer doesn’t want there to be any way in or out. Edmund had always zapped us, until Lucifer found a way to zap himself, he explained. I closed my eyes and hit the back of my head against the wall. I ignored the searing pain that shot through, and tried to think of a way for us to escape, but soon my eyelids became too heavy to keep open.

    Chapter Two

The days seem to pass in the same pattern. Edmund would bring us each a breakfast once morning had approached. It always consisted of a granola bar, apple, and a bottle of water. We didn’t get lunch, but Edmund would take us back to the kitchen for dinner, and we sometimes got to take a shower and get a clean change of clothes. During this time he never spoke a word, no matter how many times Luke chastised him. We hadn’t seen Lucifer since that first day and we knew that he was up to something, but what, we didn’t know.

What do you think he is up to? I asked Luke one night when I couldn’t sleep. He pulled the thin blanket over him and rolled over to face me on the mattress.

Honestly, I don’t know. It’s probably something that involves us, but knowing him it could be anything, he said quietly. I thought about it for a moment and didn’t like the idea. I wasn’t for sure how long it had been, but I knew that we had been here for a while. I never knew what time of day it was or night for that matter. The only thing we had to do was to talk to each other. Luke had been my shoulder to lean and most of all, to cry on. He never said a word on the nights that I cried myself to sleep. He would just lie quietly beside me, rubbing my head, until I had no more tears left to shed. I longed to hold my daughter in my arms, to have my love by my side and to just be back home. Whether that meant in Angel’s Cove, Georgia or the island, I didn’t really care. Luke would talk to me about his past life, and all the things that haunted him since he had crossed over to the good side. There were times when he couldn’t sleep from the nightmares that plagued him, and when that happened, I would tell him silly stories from my childhood that included my family.

I hadn’t had any dreams since I had been here and even though I talked to God, he never sent me a message. I knew that he was busy elsewhere and I tried to think positive thoughts, but there were times that being locked away, in this Hell, became almost too much for me to bear. I just wished that whatever Lucifer had planned would come to play, because I was tired of sitting around doing nothing.

That night Luke fell asleep before I did and with nothing else to do, I lay beside him and closed my eyes. One minute I was thinking about my wedding night and the next Daniel was suddenly in my dreams.

We were standing on the sandy beach of our island, where our cottage sat just a few feet away. It was twilight and the sky was alit with many different colors. The waves washed ashore and touched my feet, washing the sand away with it.

Daniel? Is that really you? I asked in a husky voice. He walked closer to me and held out his hands. I took them in mine feeling the electricity automatically flow between us. He smiled his heavenly smile at me and took me into his arms. Our lips meet with built up anticipation as our tongues explored. It had been too long since I felt him in my arms, his breath on my skin, his hands searching my body.

When we finally came up for air, his eyes bore into mine.

Morgan, my love… are you okay?

His hands ran up and down my body in search of something out of place.

I’m fine, Daniel. How are you here? How are you in my dream? I didn’t know if this was real or just a dream, but I had never had a regular dream in my life. He smiled down at me as his thumb caressed my cheek in a circular motion.

I am really here, my love. Kevin has found a spell that allows me into your dreams, but it is so hard to do since we don’t know when you are sleeping. We have tried many times, but all unsuccessfully, until now. This is amazing; I can’t believe that I am actually here with you. Are you okay? Has he hurt you? Where are you? He let the questions rush out.

    "I’m okay and he
