    Miss Kraus?

Megan looked up from the menu she was perusing to see a young woman with sandy brown hair standing beside her.  The young lady’s eyebrows were raised expectantly, a plastic smile stuck on her face.

    Yes?  I am she.

House phone, ma’am.  Mr. Waters is asking for you. The young woman, little more than a girl really, stepped back respectfully as Megan stood and straightened her knee-length skirt.  Megan gave her a tight-lipped smile and nodded for her to lead on.  Ma’am, indeed!   She wasn’t that old, she thought, absently touching her thick black hair that was streaked with silver, as it had been even when she was a teenager.

Sure, at thirty-nine, she had added a few pounds since her more active days in college when she pursued a number of athletic activities and, as a result, wasn’t quite as svelte, but with the weight she thought she had filled out, become more womanly.  She still turned plenty of heads as she strode through the restaurant, the sharp click of her pumps on polished tile heard clearly over the evening’s subdued dinner conversation.

Megan’s back stiffened, and her jaw ached from the effort of not screaming.  She spoke in a low, slow voice. I left my car at the office, Tom.  I was expecting you to be here to take me back to get it.  How am I supposed to get there?

There was a moment of silence, and she got the impression he was mentally weighing his next words carefully.  A cab?  Look, I know it’s not ideal, but if I didn’t finish this, we’d be in deep shit tomorrow.

You are already in deep shit, Tom, Megan growled.  It’s Friday night.   Getting a cab to come here and getting to the office with the construction on Main will take forever!  I would like to get home sometime before midnight.  I’ll just walk; it’s a few blocks.   I’ll have the taxi meet me there.  And you better be finished by the time I get there and have the new printouts ready for me!  She didn’t bother waiting for him to babble out an agreement.  Delays cost millions; increases in cost could harm the project, and if that happened then they would all be looking for work.

Megan sighed. And here she’d hoped to meet Tom, have
