    Part 1

    Chapter 1

It was in the early summer of 2006. Matteo Messina Denaro was lying on the bed in his suite at the Grand Hotel Wagner, a discrete luxury hotel situated in the heart of Palermo. Denaro and his four guards had arrived by car very late the day earlier from Naples.

Denaro was thinking about his meeting with Senator D’Algretti in Naples. The Senator had two years earlier received 5 million Euros, which was more than enough to ensure that he was elected for Forza Italia in Trapani. During the meeting Senator D’Algretti had warned Denaro, against a new high profile war against the Italian State, and that murders of journalists, who had spoken against the Cosa Nostra would have to stop. Denaro had promised the Senator, that the bombings would stop along with the executions of journalists, who had dug too deep. Senator D’Algretti had politely explained to Denaro, that the there are limits to their powers within the frame of the current democracy. The public demand for more arrests is constant, and we have comply in order to distance us from The Organization to stay in power, however the administration is looking into new laws which will give The Organization more protection and freedom of operation. This new directive comes from the highest authority. Pleased with this promise Denaro had politely answered why should we risk losing all our contacts and power within politics with high profile ways when we can commit our acts in the shadow.

Boss? The guard said through the door.

    Yes, Denaro replied.

The guard quietly opened the door and replied with a low voice Don Provenzano has arrived at the safe house, we need to go now.

Denaro immediately took on his new Armani suit and took on his new Gucci sunglasses and rushed down to the street where his driver was waiting in a black Mercedes limousine. They drove 25 minutes through dusty roads to a small discrete farm house.

Denaro was the family’s ‘a sotto capo’ the underboss and thereby had the number two position within the family. Denaro met with Don Provenzano face to face once a month, at different safe-houses. At these meetings they would discuss primarily strategic, organization and financial issues. Usually Denaro would give Don Provenzano an update of recent events going though the operational initiatives and financial aspects of the business.

Denaro was greeted at the door by the Don’s consigliere Giovanni Nicchi. Nicchi was the Don’s lawyer and acting Consigliere, or counselor, and as such held the most vital subordinate position in the family business.

Bernardo Provenzano entered the corner room the house with his usual two guards. Don Provenzano greeted Denaro with an embrace.

He sat down quietly behind a huge desk and asked quietly, Are our operations going accordingly?

Denaro cleared his throat "yes, the distribution in the South: Spain, France and Italy are going well. We have had no major problems or setbacks. Also we have expanded our network in the
