Daily Routines Die Hard

Mr. Wheeler would always sit alone in the same booth. His breakfast order never changed, always coffee and a buttered English muffin with strawberry jam. He never said much. He never really tried to carry on a conversation with me or any of the customers. He just drank his black coffee and read his morning paper. Then when it was almost arrival time for the number nine bus to downtown, he would leave change on the table to cover for the order and tip. He would nod his head at me and leave. It was a well oiled routine for the last five or so years that I have worked at the Balsam Café on King Street. Every Monday to Friday, seven a.m. sharp, he would arrive. Often he would leave the morning paper behind, neatly folded on the table. I would pick up the paper and flip through it between serving customers.
