    The Steampunked Pirates 3

    Chapter One

Bajea. The infamous Cannibal Island. No sane sailor would dare get too close. Even the insane sailor gave the island a wide birth. To put ashore on Bajea was to invite an agonising death at the hands of the cannibal tribe that roamed the island, a tribe so ferocious and abhorrent that many hesitated to call them human.

Captain Hartwell stood on the edge of the island and wondered if he and his crew could survive. They had been abandoned after a mutiny by the more venal members of Hartwell’s crew—abandoned and left to die, for they had been given no weapons to fight the cannibal threat.

Admittedly, they did have the unearthly abilities accidentally bestowed upon them by the enigmatic Mechatronic, a silver woman fallen from the sky. Her powers were somehow passing into the rest of the crew—the power to create lightning with bare hands, to expel an inbuilt whip of fine mesh, or to see in the dark as clearly as if it were day.

Mechatronic spoke of cyber technology and nanobots, yet Hartwell was far more concerned with the disturbing effect Mechatronic had on his feelings. He twitched his thoughts back to the current problem—their abandonment on Bajea. Could they escape? Very few had done so in the past.

What really put the final nail in the situation was he didn’t have any absinthe. All his supplies were on the ship. Things couldn’t get much worse, which was a cheering thought. Hartwell looked round and his vision blurred. For a moment, all he could see was the ocean, stretched out all around him. He could even smell the sea and hear the creaking of a wooden galleon—his galleon—underneath him.

The vision faded. Hartwell rubbed his head and supposed it must have been a memory triggered by stress. Putting it from his mind, he turned his attention back to the immediate situation.

    Chapter Two

Above and around them, the distant throbbing of the cannibals’ drums was increasing in tone and menace.

What do we do, Captain? asked Fitch nervously.

We must find and fortify a camp. This clearing is too exposed.

I noticed a few caves on the beach close to where we were abandoned, said Tench. Perhaps we could hold up in there?

That may not be such a good idea, replied Hartwell. That part of the island is enclosed by cliffs, making it a trap.

So what do you suggest, James? asked Susanna.

We go further inland, to the interior of the island.

That’s madness! gasped one of the crew.
