INTRODUCTION
The festivities at Lord Thurston’s manor portrayed a wealth of finery. Fine colorful goblets filled with the best wine England had to offer. Succulent nuts, fruits, and a bounty of meats, such as pig, goose, venison, and lamb filled the Grand Hall with wonderful aromas.
Lord Thurston’s pot belly bounced up and down as he roared with laughter while engaging in conversation with Lady Catherine, his wife of 20 years. Lady Catherine was a stunning woman with dark brown eyes and hair of raven. Even though she was no longer a young woman, a roving eye often glanced in her direction. They made quite the opposite pair, he a balding clumsy sort while she an elegant well-endowed beauty.
Father, you have made this the most wonderful celebration. My 18th birthday will stay in my heart for the rest of my days!
Lady Ashley beamed with glee as she hugged her father.
You are the most beautiful of all maidens in all of England, my precious daughter.
Her father responded. While the minstrels and troubadours entertained all the guests, Lady Catherine took her daughter aside and gestured to a young man standing off in a corner.
Would you like me to introduce you to the manor’s newest Squire?
Her mother asked.
Well of course Mother, it would not be lady-like to overlook the proper introduction of such a handsome Squire.
Lady Ashley replied. But when they reached the other end of the Great Hall, he had disappeared. Locating him was no easy task among the many guests. Finally they spotted him in the midst of all the beautiful woman, charming them with song and dance, while at the same time serving knights and lords with trays of food and drink.
Squire William, I would like to present my daughter, Lady Ashley.
Her mother proudly stated.
It's an honor, I'm sure. Are you enjoying your 18th birthday celebration?
He asked, his bright blue eyes quite fixated upon her exquisite beauty.
Oh yes, my father has but once again spoiled me with his kindness.
She answered.
I am most certain its endeavor he quite enjoys.
Squire William gently took her hand in his and placed a light kiss on it.
And so began a romance that would shake Lord Thurston’s manner to its bitter core, friendships shattered, trusts broken.
The next morning Lady Ashley was handed a parchment sent to her chambers.
Lady Ashley,
I would be honored if you might join me this late day for an evening ride, as it is my habit to exercise my stallion during this hour of the day.
With Anticipation
Squire William
As Lady Ashley read the parchment that was sent to her that evening, she smiled and clung it to her breast.
That fortnight would be the first of many evenings of a torrid love affair, held in great secret from royal members, except Lady Catherine, who would become Squire William’s faithful confidant. Even though Lady Ashley had been promised to wed Squire William’s father, Knight Edward, in order that she might bare him another son, there was no keeping them apart.
CHAPTER 1
Early that evening, William paced impatiently in their selected meeting place, a forest of emerald green. Large oaks swept a cool breeze rustling their branches while shadows played along tall blades of grass. William unburdened his beloved’s black stallion of its riding gear and hitched him to the trunk of a nearby tree.
Where was she? Had something happened to her? Perhaps she had had second thoughts. His mind scrambled with the unimaginable as he paced back and forth. Just as he had begun to fear that he had merely imagined this vision of beauty, he heard the sounds of hooves just beyond in the distance. Finally at last there she was, every bit the incredible beauty he had seen earlier in the day. As her horse came to
