Early on in life, I knew I wanted to be a teacher but I knew it wouldn't be forever. There was something else that I needed to discover. I loved teaching but quickly put it on the sideline once I became a mom. A love of writing was rediscovered and, a few years later, I was able to combine my love of teaching with writing. For the past five years, I have home schooled our daughter and designed her curriculum. Offering an engaging and hands on approach to learning the initial sounds of the alphabet, Unlocking the Mystery of the Alphabet provides a unique and fun way to introduce children to the fundamentals of reading. With this book, teachers and parents can tailor classroom or individualized learning experiences to their students’ needs, interests, and surroundings. By helping children bridge their familiar world with the mysterious code of reading, teachers and parents can successfully help build a child’s literacy and educational foundation.

With each letter of the alphabet, there are approximately 20 activities. Each letter’s activities are divided into 4 sections: outdoor activities, indoor activities, sample tastes, and book titles.

While the ideas and activities are numerous in providing valuable learning experiences, feel free to enhance them with your own creativity and available resources. By extending the ideas given, a child’s literacy foundation will only become stronger. Some ideas for extending or personalizing your lessons more: add your state’s name to the appropriate letter and incorporate state specific ideas, shop for specific name brand items at your favorite stores, use the names of favorite characters, celebrate a child by including their name, include family familiar names, etc.
