Science + Fantasy is what I love. All the trappings of science with a twist of fantasy thrown in. My first venture was a motion picture script ASSAULT OF HELL but it had no luck in the Hollywood market. After my first novel, JULY 57TH, I am now translating the motion picture script into a novel. After that, we'll just have to wait and see which realm calls to me.

EXT. ST. PETER'S SQUARE, VATICAN - DAY

The pavement shakes and cracks as something pushes up from below. Tourists run from the spot. An orange glow emits from the opening of the crevasse.

    INT. TRAINING ROOM - DAY

ERIC PATTERSON files into the room among forty-six other troops dressed in fatigues. They sit in folding chairs while MAJOR ROBERTS comes in with a folder in hand and proceeds to the front of the room. The Major waits until everyone gets seated.

    MAJOR ROBERTS

Gentlemen. We are here to staff an extremely important mission. General Strittmeier will fill you in on the particulars.

GENERAL MARLIN ‘IRONGUTS’ STRITTMEIER enters the room and moves to the front of the room.

    GEN. STRITTMEIER

Afternoon, gentlemen. We have a situation and we need volunteers. If anyone objects to this mission on religious or any other grounds, I will ask you to leave the room. If what you hear offends or disgusts you in any way, I ask you to leave the room as quickly and quietly as possible. Is that understood?

    One soldier raises his hand.

    GEN. STRITTMEIER

No questions, son. If anyone hears something personally objectionable, leave as soon as that decision is made. And remember: everything that is presented in this room is strictly confidential. I do not want to hear it spoken of beyond the confines of mission space. I do not want to see it mentioned on the internet. I do not want to see it on your facebook page. I do not want to see it on the evening news. I do not even want to read about it in the pages of a science fiction thriller. Is that understood?

    (beat)

You are probably wondering how you can decide if this mission is for you without hearing the particulars. I prefaced my briefing with those rules so that as we proceed through the particulars, if any one of you suddenly finds yourself unable to commit yourself wholeheartedly to the success of this venture, I want you to leave at that point. There will be no repercussions for departure. As I said, this is a voluntary mission, for reasons that will become clear as we proceed. Is that understood?

    (beat)

Good. Major, would you get the lights?

The lights are dimmed as a projector illuminates the board at the front of the room behind General Strittmeier. The images change as he talks.

    GEN. STRITTMEIER

This is an image taken a week ago in St. Peter’s Square, in the Vatican City, Rome. The pictures you are about to see may be too much for some of you. There was an explosion at this site and the investigation has led many to believe it was the act of terrorists and the mechanism for the explosion was a device containing anti-matter. The resultant explosion seems to have opened a trans-dimensional doorway. This doorway is unstable and is being held open only through the efforts of someone, or some thing, on the other side. Once this was discovered, scientists from the Fermi Institute in Italy have determined how the portal was being kept open and have applied the same technique from this dimension. And why did they do this?

    (beat)

Look. Many cultures throughout the history of mankind have spoken of this place. Our modern understanding was that this place was nothing more than myth, and bad mythology, at that.

    (beat)

Gentlemen, what you are looking at is an entryway into nothing less than Hell itself. Now, while scientists and theologians debate whether this is real, or some such poppycock, we
