About this ebook

Thin on top and thick on the bottom, William Sowder is now also out of work. Prospects look grim for this mid-40s code-monkey contractor, until the cute receptionist lets slip an enticing secret. It seems that some women in his office can perform a mysterious service for certain men, upon request, and William knows just who he's going to ask: his long-time crush, Juana Findlay, the tyrannical head of the Sales Dept, with a temper as hot as her curves. William abruptly finds himself in over his head and fighting for his life, as he learns how big a favor this is to ask and how crushing this crush can be.

It was the last Friday of August; it was 84 degrees Fahrenheit; and it was William Sowder's last day at Silicon Interactive Technologies. He was a software freelancer who had fulfilled his six-month contract with the company. While not normally a social type, William had made a few friends during this assignment and was a little discouraged that his contract hadn't been extended; he had been given reason to think it would be, and he was taken aback at being cut free. The regular, full-time employees stopped by his desk to wish him well, express their regret at his departure, and politely inquire what might be next for him.

Oh, anything, really, he joked with the younger, handsomer men. Once I'm outta here, I could literally go anywhere, he mused, chatting at the polite, beautiful women. Maybe I'll go overseas, see the world! With my skill set, I really could end up anywhere. They vaguely congratulated him and wished they, too, could break away from the grind and explore their options.

The sad thing was, there was nothing lined up for William. He was wholly self-employed, facing a depleted job market, and he was very lucky to have secured this gig with S.I.T. It was true he'd built a little savings to see him through another month, but he would have to scramble to keep food on the table and a roof over his head any longer than that.

Forty-eight years old, he fretted. Still single, still living hand-to-mouth. When are things going to change for you, William?

His supervisor, the Director of Research, stopped by under the pretense of wishing him good luck. You need anything? he asked, furtively glancing into each of his boxes as he packed his desk. Just wanted to see how you're doing. It was a good run, you know. Damned sorry we couldn't pick you up.
