About the Author
Chapter 1- Sunday Morning
Eric! Holly! Get up! We have lots to do before we can go on the picnic!
Yuck
Eric grumbled as his eyes opened to the sound of his mother’s voice. He kicked back the covers and sat up on the side of his bed. He had just gone through another growth spurt. He felt tired all the time and usually a little achy in his joints. He had longish brown hair, brown eyes, and long, lean build. In the past year he had grown nearly too long for his bed.
Another stupid picnic’ he mumbled.
I’m almost 16. I should get to do what I want on Sundays."
Eric pulled on jean shorts and a t-shirt, and headed to the bathroom. The door was locked and the sound of running water came from behind it.
Stupid Holly. She beat him to the toilet again.
Holly,
he yelled, I have to go! Hurry up!
He waited at the door for a response that didn’t come.
"Holly!" he screamed, pounding his fist on the door. Did you hear me?
His sister yelled back: You better quit it or I’m telling Mom!
What a miserable day, Eric thought. He needed to go so bad he almost broke into a little dance, but that was something babies did. Chances are Holly would take so long he’d end up peeing in his pants, and then he’d be stuck spending the whole day with her and she’d tease him the whole time.
Stupid family.
Going to Mike’s house to jam on their guitars all day in his garage- that was the way to spend a Sunday. Not wetting yourself and going on a picnic with a brat sister.
The door flew open and a slim, pretty blond strutted out with her nose held high over a cocky smile. She was fifteen, just eleven months younger than Eric, and did her best to irritate him to death.
Here you are, your majesty. Your throne awaits,
she announced dramatically as she exited.
Eric drew back his fist. Holly squealed and bolted for the staircase.
Mom!
she exclaimed, but then Eric dashed into the bathroom and slammed the door behind him, so she descended the stairs slowly and went to the kitchen.
Sarah, a 39-year old blond had listened to her children bickering upstairs as she cooked. She shook her head as she stood at the stove and asked her husband, Why do the kids fight so much
?
John was sitting at the table, sipping coffee while he studied a set of blueprints.
They’re kids,
he answered without looking up from the big roll of plans.
