Chapter One - Henry’s First Case

Henry Dodds suddenly appeared on his favourite park bench in the gardens of Finchley Community Park. He felt a little bewildered by his sudden materialisation but underneath it all, exceedingly calm. What was going on?

He soon found out when a large, fat woman wearing a bright red hat and brown overcoat came up to the bench and promptly sat in his lap!

Henry exclaimed indignantly and jumped up from the bench. But the large woman who was calling to a little, white, toy dog, Basil! Basil, come here! didn’t even see him!

In fact, now that Henry thought about it, he hadn’t pushed the fat woman from his lap, but instead jumped up through her! What was going on?

The dog Basil came up and sniffed impertinently at him and when Henry sternly said ‘Go away!’ the dog ran away to the other side of the park with his stubby, white tail cowering between his short legs.

The whole time she was completely oblivious to Henry and even walked straight through him, as she walked across the park to her frightened pet! That’s when it finally dawned on Henry - he was a ghost!

Now Henry was a fairly pragmatic person when alive and so he still was when he was dead. After a few moments of mild agitation and a little despair, he then cheered up and began to look on the bright side of being incorporeal!

Henry had been a Boy Scout as a child and had learned from his pack leader, Akela to ‘roll with the punches’ and ‘see the bright side of every situation.’ He had even been given a scout badge, on that very subject! So he was well prepared to assess the current situation and make the best of it!
