    When I first set up my store here, the line had just got as far as Butterfield, and cowboys was bringing in their stock three months of the year. Butterfield was a real busy place back then, and maybe a mite more lively than was necessary. That was when Charlene founded the Sequestrian Society and got in Sheriff Gregg to keep an eye on things.

    Only then the railroad extended the track another few miles west and Pickford got all our business. Many people here–not just Gregg or Charlene–felt Pickford was welcome to all the money and trouble that comes with being a cow town.

    A year or two later–just towards the end of the season–there was an outbreak of scarlet fever in Pickford and the mayor was asked if he’d mind letting them cowboys bring their steers into Butterfield one more time. Charlene and Gregg were dead set against the idea but Butterfield needed the money so the mayor said yes.

    Naturally Butterfield’s womenfolk were very excited at the prospect of having the town full of men after so long a drought: until somebody pointed out the sort of stuff that had happened back in town’s heyday–like the time a couple of the
