About this ebook

Margo is about to receive a visitor. Once the alien enters her apartment, Margo can't quite decide what is happening.

“You look just like me,” Margo said, shaking her head.

“You look just like me,” the visitor said, smiling.

This was not entirely true. The visitor was dripping wet and completely naked. Even in the dim light Margo knew that this stranger looked at lot better.

It was a dark and stormy night

Margo Swanson had lived a quiet life in Northeast Portland until that stormy night in March. She and others had been under surveillance for several months and finally Margo was chosen as the test subject. Now it was my mission to replace Margo Swanson, or become Margo Swanson, only better.

Her basic information, location, habits and schedule were all integrated into my mental network. I was created in the lab, using a small sample of her DNA, and modified for the purposes of my mission. My programming would unfold as soon as I hit the ground. I remember being activated in the drop tube, but my life really started when I took that first breath of moist, cold air.

Hello? I said out loud after I took my second breath.

The utterance triggered a signal to the labratory and I received my first set of instructions.

Goodbye, I said as I started running.

I was dropped off in a cloud of dust and a sonic boom. I touched down at ten minutes after eleven and the swap was to take place fifteen minutes later. The vessel that delivered me to Portland was anything but subtle.

The gravity drive created large vortices in the atmosphere even though the ship was traveling in stealth mode. There were several tornados that touched down in the area that night and no one took notice of my arrival.

    No one, except Margo.

I walked through the rain to her apartment building and knocked on the door.

Who is it? she asked from behind the flimsy, wooden door.

Who is it? I repeated, tweaking my audio interface.

It was the first time I had heard her voice, so it seemed natural to practice, matching her cadence.

Seriously, she said. Do you know what time it is?

Humans were so concerned about their place in the space-time continuum.

Do you know what time it is? I replied, but this time I wasn’t just mimicking her.

I heard Margo push something hard up against the door, so I went through the window. I didn’t break the glass, I just passed through it, in case you’re the type to worry about that kind of thing. She seemed surprised by my appearance beside her.

What are you? she gasped. Are you an angel?

    Hardly, I replied.
