    At the start

Rumors of the ending of the world had always abounded but none was as real as this. The date was right; the calculations had all fallen into place. Hendrich, at the German institute of sciences pored over part of the calculations that led to the theory.

The numbers were so perfect that they even shocked him. He looked out of the window at the small rivulets of water formed by the raindrops splattering against the window. This was July; the sky was overcast as the rain pelted Berlin.

He had already contacted his family and had had them moved to another location. He wanted it that way so that when they started falling, his family would be miles away from here.

Three months prior, three South African scientists working in the Russian tundra had first noticed it. At first, it seemed like nothing, a small fissure in the ground with a little steam. They were agricultural scientists that had come to Russia to study the spread of crop pests during winter.

The crack was of no concern to them; it was not uncommon to come across such cracks as the fields were near a network of fissures.

As dusk approached, they both went toward the camps and the next morning, they were at the fissure again but this time, the fissure was about two meters wide and by all looks, it seemed like it was growing. They quickly reported to their senior and a geological survey team was promptly dispatched.

That was just the first case, before long, reports of even bigger fissure started to hit the international media. Scientists in journals and the media tried to outdo each other as to what phenomenon was creating the fissures.

The Chinese and the American governments were the first to approve formation of teams of the best world scientists to try and find the cause of all the problems. The U.N. then sanctioned its UNEP offices based in Nairobi to start scientific study into the phenomenon.

It was 8 months before there was any major break in the study and the break came from a very unexpected source.
