    Chapter 1

    Bean Versus Monkey

Hi, my name is Johnny Lovebird, but my friends call me Monkey. You'd think with a last name like Lovebird, I'd look forward to Valentine's Day. But I have to tell you, Valentine's Day is the worst holiday ever invented! And you will not believe what happened to me this year.

It all started on a crazy day the beginning of February. Half the class was out sick, but Mrs. Red cleared her throat and announced that our school science fair would take place on February 14th. That sent shivers up my spine. I don't think love and science should mix.

My best friend, Bean, snickered when he heard the announcement. I looked over at him. Unfortunately I don't sit right next to him anymore. Sandra Campbell sits between us. She is a musical genius and therefore a member of our club, the Smartboys and Girls Club. She also happens to be the cutest girl in the fourth grade. Her red hair hangs down around her face in gentle curls that accent her green eyes.

Not that I'm saying I like her in a romant-icky way. She's just my friend, and she happens to be very cute.

Hey, Sandra, Art whispered. He sits on the other side of me and is also a member of our club.

I glanced over at Art who held up a drawing he'd done of Sandra. He'd used a red colored pencil to draw a heart around her portrait.

Yuck, I said. Art, that's gross.

Sandra's cheeks flushed a rosy pink beneath her freckles. She blinked at the picture for a moment and then looked down at her fingers, which started to tap out a rhythm on her desk.

Kyung-sam Gee, Mrs. Red said, grabbing the paper out of Art's hands. What do you think you are doing? She looked down at the drawing, and her lips curled into a little smile. But that didn't stop her from writing Art's name up on the board. That means he's in trouble. I noticed Mrs. Red didn't throw the picture away though. She tucked it carefully in her desk before handing out the papers with the directions for our science fair projects.

Now, unlike Valentine's Day, a science fair is totally awesome. It means my mom has to let me actually do an experiment. Last year I did an experiment to see what type of fruit slushy was the best. That meant mom had to let me buy a bunch of different kinds of fruit and blend them up in the blender with milk and sugar and ice and get people to sample them for my calculations. After careful scientific study, I discovered that strawberry slushies are #1. And I took first place in my grade for the school and got an Excellent ribbon when I went on to the district Science Fair.

But last year I didn't know Bean. He hadn't moved in yet. This year I did know Bean, and Bean is a scientific genius. I didn't know how I could ever compete with him.

Hey, Bean, I said when we'd gone out to first recess. What do you think you'll do for the science fair? There was still way too much snow on the ground outside. He and I climbed up a big snow bank against the school wall and sat at the very top. Bean didn't even try to measure how deep the snow was. He'd given that up around Christmas time after
