    Chapter One

It didn't take long for Anne and Albert to settle into their new life as husband and wife. They spent the first week settling into their new home, arranging furniture and unpacking items they had ordered for their home that arrived while they were in San Francisco.

The following week, Albert rode over to Sky Valley, returning to work. He was greeted by his brothers as he climbed down from Diablo, 'Bout time you got back. We thought you might have decided to stay in San Francisco, Ben told him.

No, Albert laughed. We had a wonderful time, but I'm back. Where is Father?

Sacramento, Henry volunteered, He went to get Mary and bring her back with him. She and William are having some problems.

It must be serious if he's bringing her back with him. Albert replied.

Yeah, it is, but he wouldn't elaborate with us. Just that she needed to get away from William, Henry continued.

He does want us to check out Sage canyon. We've got about two hundred head of cattle missing from up there. Ben told his older brother.

When did this start? Albert inquired.

It started over the last week. Didn't seem possible, but they're gone. Think we've got some rustlers, Henry explained.

Well, let's get started and head toward the canyon. Maybe we can pick up some tracks, Albert suggested.

While Albert was busy checking on the cattle with his brothers, Anne was getting Albert's study in order. She spent the better part of the day unpacking his books, arranging them on his bookshelves and organizing his desk. Finishing up in his study, she decided she should figure out the menu for dinner. She had not heard Albert rise that morning. I cannot believe I did not hear him get up. Wonderful wife I am! My husband's first day back to work and he did not even have breakfast! He had kissed her before leaving, telling her to stay in bed, that he would grab something at Sky Valley.

After having coffee, she returned to Albert's study to go through the mail she had placed on his desk. Thumbing through it, she found a letter addressed to her from Mr. Lawrence. Opening it, the attorney informed her that he had contacted the windmill company in Pennsylvania and they would entertain an offer from her to purchase the company. It was to be a belated wedding gift to Albert, one she thought he'd love.

Diving into her household chores, wanting their home to be perfect; she worked until just before he returned that evening. Knowing that Anne had had servants to perform these tasks, Albert had approached her with the idea of hiring a housekeeper. She had declined, telling him No, I want to see to my own home and cook your meals myself. Besides, there's only the two of us and how big a mess can we make?

After starting dinner, Anne began heating water for his bath, one of the little things she enjoyed doing for him. Going to their room, she laid out towels, his razor and a mirror, along with clean clothes. Going downstairs, while setting the dining room table, she impulsively added candles and wine glasses. Deciding she wanted an intimate and relaxing dinner with him after a long day of working.

She had changed into a clean dress after freshening up when she heard him ride up. Peeking out the window, she saw him leading Diablo to the barn, returning shortly to the house. Opening the door, she flew into his arms, greeting him with a hug and smothering him with a kiss. I missed you today, she told him.

I missed you too, he said laughing, enjoying her greeting. What smells so good, I'm starving.

Dinner, you are having roasted pork, rosemary herb potatoes, green beans, biscuits and peach pie. While I finish up, why don't you go and enjoy your bath. I have your water ready, she answered.

Anne, I don't expect you to go to all that trouble, he told her.

It's no trouble. I want to do this for you. Now just go and enjoy your bath.

As he entered the bathing room, he saw she had set everything out for him. Albert had never had anyone see to his needs before Anne. Although he loved the attention, he didn't want her to feel he expected it. He looked forward to returning home, knowing she was there waiting for him. His life before now seemed like a dream. The loneliness that used to haunt him was just a vague memory now. She had filled him with love and understanding.

After settling himself in the tub, he heard her enter. How was your first day back? she asked, placing his dirty clothes in a basket and then sitting on a stool beside him.

Busy, he said. Seems we have some rustlers, we're missing about two hundred head of cattle.

Picking up the soap and cloth she began to soap his broad back asking, Couldn't they have wandered off?

No, they're gone, we checked the north ridge and the canyon today, but there is no sign of them. We'll look some more tomorrow, he replied, enjoying her touch. The nearness of her and the soft scent of her perfume was driving him to distraction as he told her, Anne, sweetheart, although I love what you're doing, unless you would like to join me, I suggest we forgo the bathing of one another until later.

Looking into the water she saw that he was becoming aroused. Quickly handing him the cloth and soap, telling him, I best go see to dinner.

Chuckling to himself, he thought, I shouldn't have embarrassed her, but Anne doesn't realize the effect she has on me.

After getting over her embarrassment, Anne set about putting dinner on the table. Lighting the candles, she placed a bottle of wine beside Albert's place. Joining her shortly, as he eyed the table and the wine asking, What's the special occasion?

There is no special occasion, I just wanted to have an intimate dinner with my husband, she replied, handing him the wine bottle, Here will you please open this? She put her arms around his broad shoulders and hugged him. No other woman had dared to be that forward with Albert before. Anne however, was forthright in her love for him, both publicly and privately. Something Albert had never experienced before. Now he reveled in her attention.

After dinner, they retired to his study while Albert sorted through the mail on his desk. Anne sat quietly as he announced, Here's a letter from Mr. Lawrence. After reading it, he told her, We are going to have to go to England if we want to sell the estate and the other buildings around London. However, there is no rush. Your cousin is staying at the estate, keeping it up quite nicely.

Albert debated telling her other news Mr. Lawrence had given him, that her father had contacted him regarding Anne. Albert, the attorney had written, John asked that I contact you and ask that he be allowed to see his daughter. He is ill and wants to make amends with her. This is his address in Washington. Believe him if you will, I don't trust the man. After a moment of indecision, he began, Anne, Mr. Lawrence received a letter from you father. He wants to see you, he says he is ill.

Turning to face him, she didn't respond immediately, then answered, I don't want to see him.

I'm against it, but it's your decision. Mr. Lawrence asked that I tell you, he explained.

You've told me and I don't want to see him, she said coldly.

Trying to change the subject, Albert said, I have to go into town tomorrow and thought you could go with me. We need to send Mr. Lawrence a wire then so he can contact your father and tell him of your decision.

I'd love to go into town. There are some things I need from the mercantile, she exclaimed. Then she thought, now is the time to tell him about the windmills. Albert, there is something I need to talk to you about. I know we haven't discussed the trust, but I have. . .

Anne, I still haven't gone through all the papers. Can this wait until I have a chance to thoroughly review them, he asked.

Of course, whenever you have the time, she replied, thinking, I just hope you do so before I have to make a decision on the company. If I go ahead and purchase it
