    Dedication

It has taken me 14 years to write this book, a slow process by which I added a chapter to every other year or so. I originally started it in high school - I was proud of it and thought it was good, so I showed the first few chapters to my English teacher who literally responded with, No one would ever read that trash.

That’s probably one of the worst things you could ever tell a writer, especially at such a young age. And so I did what any disillusioned and downtrodden kid would’ve done – I lost my enthusiasm and largely gave up on the book.

I continued to write in the years to come but there was no motivation to write books anymore. Instead, I wrote articles for technology publications. I loved to write and people always told me they loved my writing style. Someone once said that my writing speaks to readers rather than talk at them. And yet, despite the encouragement, I could not find it in me to finish my book.

Everything changed recently. I shared this story with the love of my life and it captured her. She’s a straight shooter and tells it like it is – if she thought the story was not any good, she would have told me. She encouraged me and her words inspired me to finish the book. She gave me the push that I needed.

Gisselle Almanzar, this book, and every subsequent story I write, is for you. You are the only person who has ever made me feel good about myself, the only person who gives meaning to my life. You are the best and most caring person I know. You are what the world needs, and you are the perfect example of how people should be.

Thank you for being who you are, I wouldn’t change a single thing about you. I love you.

With all the love in my heart I dedicate this book and series to you!

    Intro

Detectives Michael Reyes and Morgan Westfield are two of the NYPD’s strongest cops. They’ve only been partnered for two years but their record for closing cases is the highest of any detective duo in the force’s history.

Mike is infamous for his instincts and hunches, a solid rock that everyone could count on to piece any puzzle together. He attributes his successes to the support he receives at home from his wife, a beautiful doctor named Giselle.

His partner, Morgan, is also quite a phenomenon. She rose through the ranks quickly to become the youngest detective, male or female, in the history of the NYPD. She spends all of her free time studying past cases and reading about the criminal psyche, and cares very little about her lack of a romantic life.

This is the first of a series of stories about the two detectives solving gruesome crimes on the mean and gritty streets of New York.

    Chapter 1

The sound of waves crashing on the shore filled the air as a foghorn blew in the distance. A dark figure wearing a hooded sweater knelt at the waterline of the beach, his pants wet and unbuttoned. He looked down at the blood in his hands and watched as a shallow wave washed it away. His hands trembled as he slowly began to realize what he had just done. He turned around to see her laying there, a beautiful young woman no more than 19 years of age.

She was naked. Her legs were slightly parted, her panties were around her ankles and there was bruising on her thighs. Her neck had been slit from ear to ear. She laid there motionless with a hollow gaze in her eyes. The moonlight shone on her corpse in such a way that he could not help but find the entire scene oddly romantic.

    The dark figure calmly
