    Fetch it, Taza. Come on, boy, you can do it. Sofia shook her head in frustration, brown tresses flouncing, but the collie scampered away, more interested in a brightly colored butterfly than in playing with her. You are hopeless. Absolutely hopeless. Giving up, she ran to the bushes that blocked the lane from view. Peering through, she spied the ball lying on the far side.

    Squeezing though a gap in the bushes, Sofia ran into the dusty lane, but stopped abruptly at the sight of a carriage careening rapidly over the hill. Reaching down to pick up her ball, she dashed back toward the bushes, but then paused to watch the carriage. Golden trim gleamed in the sun, and the horses trotted along with heads held high.

    As the carriage pulled close, a deep voice spoke from within, Stop! The tone was imperious, causing the driver to pull up sharply. The horses stood huffing and chomping at their bits, but nothing further happened.

    Sofia stood for a moment, curious. She could not see into the carriage, but felt eyes upon her. The sensation sent chills down her back, and after a moment, she dashed over to the hedge and squeezed back through. She ran toward Taza and picked up the dog. Turning around, she saw the gold trim of the carriage and the carriage driver’s hat, still not moving.

    Sofia wondered what the mysterious passenger inside the carriage could possibly want. Her family had few visitors, and those were neighbors or others from the small
