About this ebook

From the editors of One Buck Horror come five chilling tales of the walking dead! These incredible authors bring us stories steeped in emotion, packed with excitement, and dripping with gore - everything you'd expect from the zombie apocalypse!

Being dead doesn't stop Jimmy's mom from being "The Best Mother". The neighbors may not understand, but when they try to come between them they find out there's nothing stronger, or more terrible, than a mother's love, in this story by James Owens.

In "The Levees of the Styx" by David Dunwoody, two survivors fight to stay ahead of the growing zombie horde. Their struggle will take them to the very edge of survival, and uncover shocking truths about the outbreak's origins.

"Little Red Zombie Hood" was born a zombie in the womb. Now she's all grown up, and the wolves have come to call. But Red has an ax in her basket, and the last place those wolves want to end up is grandmas' house, in this unorthodox and disturbing outing by Alana I. Capria.

In "He Stopped Loving Her Today", a man navigates the city ruins, shadowed by the walking corpse of a lost love. But a man with nothing to lose might just risk everything for one last dance in this tale of love among the ruins by James R. Tuck.

A lone zombie wanders off from the pack, driven by the urge to bring something new into the world. But will the thing she carries inside her offer hope for the world, or damnation? Find out in "Mother Sisyphus" by Robert Davies.

    The Best Mother

    by James Owens

Some kids are playing soccer in Jimmy's yard, and one of them kills his mother.

Jimmy grins sheepishly when the ball sails past his feet and somebody yells out, Hey, you're supposed to kick it, dickwad! He is distracted because he is watching his mom and dad watch him.

It isn't really a game. They are just knocking the ball back and forth and teasing anybody who misses and looks silly. Jimmy used to play real soccer at his old school, and he would be much better than any of these kids, if they were playing by the rules. This is still fun, he thinks. It is the first time since moving and starting at the new school that Jimmy seems to be making friends. His mother talks a lot about how shy he is whenever she meets other mothers in the neighborhood. It embarrasses him a little because she sounds like she is proud that he doesn't mix much with their children. But now Jimmy is pretty sure she has ducked into the kitchen to stir up a batch of cookies that she will soon bring out on a plate, handing them around, still warm and soft from the oven.

He heads the ball all the way across the yard and glances toward the house. His parents are watching through the big window, his dad smiling and proud and flattered that the neighborhood kids have gathered to be with his son, his mom looking a bit worried that it will all go wrong, somehow. His dad gives him a thumbs-up sign and pulls his mom closer with an arm around her shoulder, protectively. His mom is very pretty, with long dark hair framing a small, elf-like face. His parents love him, of course, but they are in love with each other. He feels a small pang of jealousy.

A tall, heavy girl named Zellie Gruber, who is in Jimmy's class
