Temporarily Away

About this ebook
When a fellow writer's mail is returned marked "temporarily away" and she is unable to reach him, Henrietta Harcourt asks the local sheriff to investigate, and the man's mummified remains are discovered in his remote cabin on the edge of a national forest. After his death is dismissed as natural causes, a suspicious Henrietta prods the sheriff to look at someone with motive, means, and opportunity. When he does, "natural causes" begins to look as unlikely as "temporarily away."

Amanda Brenner is a native Midwesterner who has traveled extensively throughout the United States and now lives quietly with her husband and an assortment of wildlife visitors to their urban home. Her interest in writing began at an early age when westerns were popular attractions at the local theater. It seemed only natural that her first novel, Trail of Vengeance, should be in that genre. After finishing a second western, Shadow of the Rope, she began to explore a new direction and completed three contemporary mysteries involving private investigator Sid Langdon, a self-doubting magnet for offbeat clients and hapless scenarios, the latest being The Mystery of the Nourdon Blue. Amanda enjoys learning from the books she reads, a characteristic reflected in the research she includes in her own works. Thank you for your time.

TEMPORARILY AWAY
by
Amanda Brenner
Oh, nature's noblest gift, my grey goose quill, Slave of my thoughts, obedient to my will, Torn from the parent bird to form a pen, That mighty instrument of little men.
-- Lord Byron
Henrietta Harcourt considered the piece of mail in her hand, puzzled by the postal notation that accompanied its return. Temporarily Away,
it said. It was the latest journal of club activity published and distributed to members of her writers’ group, The Grey Goose Quill Society. This particular copy had been sent to Matt Mercer in Pleasant Corners, a small and obscure rural community about thirty miles from Henrietta’s home in Dobbsville.
Temporarily away? Like where? As secretary for the group, Henrietta was in charge of the membership rolls; in fact, it was her job to keep track of the group’s small cadre of writers, some successful but mostly amateurs wishing they were.
She decided she would simply send him a message alerting him to the situation; after all, he was entitled to the Society's quarterly journals as part of his membership fee. And so she promptly sent a message to the web address on her record roll, confident the mystery would be cleared up as soon as he received her explanation. Several minutes after dispatching the missive, it was returned bearing a notation that there was no such address!
Henrietta stared at the rejection a full minute before picking up the telephone and dialing the number Matt had provided on his membership application. Six rings later, the call rolled over to Matt’s answering machine. There was nothing unusual or informational in his invitation to leave a message which he promised to return promptly, yet six hours passed with no word.
At this point, Henrietta pondered her options. Since she had no idea of how long Matt had already been gone, she considered simply remailing the journal, but on reflection, considered that if one piece had recently been returned because he was temporarily away,
there was no guarantee that a second attempt would be successful. Consulting her records, Henrietta noted there was no alternative ‘snow bird’ address for Matt, as was the case with several other members who wintered in sunnier climes. No clue at all. If he had arranged for his mail to be held at the post office during his absence, the journal, being first class mail and bearing a return request in case of address change or inability to deliver, still would have been sent back. Then a thought occurred to her—if the post office knows Matt is temporarily away,
perhaps they also know when he will return.
Dialing the Dobbsville post office, whose jurisdiction included the tiny hamlet of Pleasant Corners, resulted in the call being answered by Billy Bertram, one of three employees in the small branch office of the town of three thousand.
Billy,
