Guy Shepardson knew, even before he picked up the handset, that the person telephoning him at that moment was his old friend and mentor Eric MacGinnis. A familiar spirit which he had acquired as a result of a black magic operation had told him so.

‘ Eric ! ’ he cried, as he took the call. ‘ Well I'll be saved ! To what do I owe the pleasure ? ’

The voice of a sixty-year-old man to whom he had not spoken in several years answered from down the line. ‘ Oh, I just thought it'd been a while and it'd be good to catch up,’ Eric replied.

Guy creased his good-looking features into a frown. ‘ Even if I weren't a mind-reader, I can tell something's wrong.’

‘ Ha,’ Eric said nervously. ‘ I can't get used to these abilities you've acquired since … you know.’

‘ Do you still help people who've been messing with the occult ? ’ Guy said.

‘ Yes, yes,’ Eric replied. ‘ Many of them are just crazy, but some of them are quite genuine.’

‘ Really ? ’ Guy said. ‘ What's wrong with them ? ’

‘ They believe they're under attack from sinister magicians,’ Eric sighed. ‘ People like … well, pretty much like you.’
