Colon Cleansing for Slimming & Health

    INTRODUCTION

Colon cleansing, known by some people as colon therapy, or colon hydrotherapy, covers a number of alternative therapies intended to remove faeces and toxins from the colon and intestinal tract. Colon cleansing may take the form of colon hydrotherapy, professionally called colonic irrigation, or oral cleansing treatments such as dietary supplements. More recently, the marketing of colon cleansing oral supplements has been widespread, but this is outside the scope of this book. Sufficient to say that their use is not widely accepted as being best practice. Some forms of colon hydrotherapy use enemas to inject water into the bowel, these can be mixed with herbs or other liquids, using equipment designed for that purpose. Practitioners believe that accumulations of putrefied faeces line the walls of the large intestine and that these accumulations harbour parasites or pathogenic gut flora, causing nonspecific symptoms and general ill-health. This auto-intoxication hypothesis is based on medical beliefs of the Ancient Egyptians and Greeks.

It is interesting to note that this hypothesis was to some extent discredited in the early 20th century. However, despite the fact that little scientific evidence overwhelmingly supports the benefits of colon cleansing, it is increasingly popular and in widespread use, not least amongst many celebrities for whom optimal health and appearance is vital for their profession. If the so-called ‘beautiful’ people who do use this therapy feel their health is better, their appearance is much improved, they have more energy and they lose excess weight and look slimmer, who is to argue with them?

The bowel itself is not actually dirty and barring drugs, disease or mechanical blockage, generally cleans itself naturally without assistance, or so doctors believe. Indeed, certain enema preparations have been associated with heart attacks and electrolyte imbalances, and improperly prepared or used equipment can cause infection or damage to the bowel. Frequent colon cleansing can also lead to dependence on enemas to defecate and some herbs may reduce the effectiveness of prescription drugs. This does beg the question ‘why do people do it?’ For most, the answer is quite simple, as stated previously, they look better, feel better, healthier and have more energy. The support for colon cleansing is the concept of autointoxication, the idea that food enters the intestine and rots. The ancient Egyptians believed that toxins formed as a result of decomposition within the intestines, and moved from there into the circulatory system causing fever and the development of pus. The Ancient Greeks adopted and expanded the idea, applying their belief in the four humours. During the 19th century, studies seemed to support the autointoxication hypothesis, and mainstream physicians promoted the idea. Over time, the concept broadened to auto-intoxication which supposes that the body cannot fully dispose of its waste products and toxins, which then accumulate in the intestine. In some cases, the concept led to radical surgeries to remove the colon for unrelated symptoms.

Auto-intoxication was popular in the medical community from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century, but lost favour as advances in science failed to support its claims. The practice of colon cleansing has undergone a resurgence in the alternative medical community, perhaps due to the frequent failures of the socalled ‘professional’ medical community who seem unable to come to grips with so many modern complaints, such as obesity, depression to name but two. Colon cleansing may be done for its own sake, as a procedure prior to surgery, colonoscopy, or similar procedures. The colon is cleansed of solid matter with a regimen of liquid foods then a day before the procedure a whole bowel irrigation can be performed.

The symptoms that are attributed to auto-intoxication, headache, fatigue, loss of appetite and irritability, are often caused by mechanical distension within the bowel, such as irritable bowel syndrome, the action of toxins from putrefying food is not necessarily scientifically proven. The benefits anecdotally attributed to colon cleansing are sometimes vague and some claims made by manufacturers and practitioners are based on a flawed understanding of the body. Some say there is little scientific evidence of actual benefit to the procedure, and no evidence that it can alleviate the symptoms that are attributed to the theories of colon cleansing, although others happily use enemas and colonics regularly and claim great benefits.

Medical professionals have stated that no surgeries, autopsies or other observations of colons have discovered any evidence of compacted faeces or other evidence to support the theory of auto-intoxication or the need for colon cleansing. However, the waste material that emerges during the procedure does not wholly support their claim.

The human body naturally removes waste material, and colon cleansing is not necessary except preparatory to a colonoscopy. Colon cleansing may disrupt the balance between bacteria and natural chemicals in the bowel, and may interfere with the colon’s ability to shed dead cells.

Other rare but serious complications include gastrointestinal perforation from improper insertion and amoebic infection from poorly sterilised equipment. Some colon cleansing regimes disrupt fluid and electrolyte balance which may lead to dehydration and salt depletion, whilst repeated or excessive cleansing programs can lead to anaemia and
