    About This Book

Knowledge is power. This book will give you the knowledge and power to take control of your Internet advertising, to make smarter, more cost effective decisions. It will teach you in an easy, step by step program, how to do everything yourself. It’s not complicated; it just takes some time and effort. Ultimately, you will improve your results, make more money and stop wasting money. Even if you decide to not manage your Google AdWords internally and to outsource the work, at least you’ll have a much clearer understanding of what needs to be done and insure you are working with someone who knows what they are doing and is working in your best interest, not theirs.

I absolutely hate when I talk with a small business owner and discover they’re NOT doing the right thing with their AdWords advertising. Worst off, they simply don’t know. For many, it’s too complicated and time consuming. They don’t have the time or interest in learning all this stuff, and they don’t know whom to trust. Maybe they’ve had a bad experience in the past, maybe they’ve trusted a smooth talking salesperson, and only to find out that what they bought wasn’t they wanted or needed. Maybe they tried to do it themselves, thought they could figure it out, and wasted their time and money, only to end up frustrated and disillusioned.

Well, if any of those maybes sound familiar, I’m here to help. I’m going to teach you how to set up, manage and get results with Google AdWords. We’re going to make it easy, clear and concise. I’m not to overwhelm you with technical jargon. This won’t be an advanced guide, it will be a quick start, do it yourself guide from start to finish. If you own a small / medium size business, you probably need to be advertising on the Internet. Google’s the first place to start, because they have the bulk of the search market.

If you’re a pessimist, you may be saying to yourself, why should I pay Google for clicks, when I could do SEO and get free traffic. Maybe you can, maybe you can’t. The challenge with search engine optimization is that there is no guarantee or results and lately, Google keeps changing and adjusting their algorithms (the methods they use to organically rank web sites). In the past few years, we’ve seen major algorithm changes with Penguin, Panda and Hummingbird. SEO is complex and time consuming. When done correctly and effectively, it’s fantastic. For many businesses, it makes sense to diversify their Internet marketing budget, allocating some funds towards paid search (Pay Per Click) and some towards Organic search (search engine optimization). This book focused on paid search.

Pay per click is a quick and easy way to get your ads on the first page of Google, control your budget, get leads and make sales. You can get leads and sales on the same day you start, and you can make changes whenever you want to your ads, to your keywords, to your budget and much, much more.

My business specializes in managing Google AdWords campaigns for small and medium size businesses all across the country as well as internationally. I personally manage over 1.5 million dollars in advertising revenue each year for my clients. I’m a Google Partner, a Google Engage All-Star and a Bing Ads Professional.

I’ve looked at hundreds on Google AdWords campaigns, done tons of campaign setups and talk with Google on a regular basis. I’ve seen good campaigns and I’ve seen some really bad campaigns. I’ve talked with some very knowledgeable advertisers, and some that really don’t have a clue. I’ve talked with some advertisers that think they know a lot about AdWords, but really could use some help. And, I’ve talked with some business owners that really have been taken advantage of, which really upsets me. That’s part of the reason I wrote this guide, to help you clearly and easily understand how to get better results.

I have been involved in small business advertising for almost 30 years, both as a business owner and as an advertising executive. I have a Master Certificate in Internet Marketing from the University of San Francisco and have read and studied Internet Marketing for the past decade. I was also a top print and Internet sales professional for a major corporation (Hall of Fame) and ranked #2 District Sales Manager in the country for a large Telecommunication company.

Maybe none of this really matters to you. What does matters to you is your business and how you’re going to get better results with your Internet marketing results. I’m not here to sell you on my service, or for that fact, to sell you anything.

What may matter to you is that I’ve been in your shoes. My wife had started a new business venture a few years ago, selling hand painted ceiling medallions, via a brand new web site. I really wanted to help her business be successful, and tried to help her sell her products on Google. We eagerly budgeted money for advertising on Google, opened our first AdWords account, and started advertising our new business venture. We did get a few sales, but mostly, we spent money and didn’t make enough to justify the advertising. It got to be expensive and frustrating.

The sad truth is that I didn’t know what I was doing. It was a bad experience for us, and eventually we paused the advertising and eventually shut down the business.

We were disappointed, but it wasn’t necessarily a failure. It was a very good learning experience. My greatest learning experiences in life, my greatest successes, have almost always come from challenges and failure. Instead of getting discouraged, I decided to learn about Google AdWords and Pay Per Click marketing.

I had been doing a lot of seo with a large seo company. I had client’s who needed help with Google AdWords, so I started studying and learning. I took both AdWords exams, which were very difficult, and passed. I became certified and started managing campaigns for clients.

Over time, I became very knowledgeable in AdWords and skilled in managing campaigns. My client’s were happy with my work and with their results, they stayed with my service, and my business continued to grow. I talk with Google support on a regular basis, and overall, get very positive feedback from them regarding the work I do and the strategies I implement for my client’s.

In 2010 and 2011, Google started making major changes to the way they rank web site organically. We started seeing a lot of our clients organic rankings plummet. I made a decision at that point to shift my business away from selling seo programs and focus on Google AdWords management.

Since then, I’ve learned so much about AdWords. I still continue to learn and grow in my knowledge and AdWords continues to change and evolve.

As a result of my experiences, I felt that I had a calling to help others. I’ve been a small business owner and I know what it’s like. I know how important a business is to a small business owner, and how crucial advertising their business can be. And, I’ve worked with a lot of medium size businesses that want to take their business to the next level, but need some knowledgeable help and guidance.

This book was written to help the do it yourselfer. It’s meant as an easy to follow guide. A get you started quick guide, with not too much or too little detail.

With the info in this book, you will be able to quickly and skillfully set up a Google AdWords account and campaign. You’ll learn best practices, how to avoid wasting money and how to optimize the campaign for best results.

I can’t teach you everything in this book. But I will teach you enough to have the knowledge you need to get better results and to take a more intelligent approach to your Pay Per Click advertising.

If ultimately you decide, as many businesses do, to hire a professional management firm to handle your
