    PART ONE

    PRINCIPLES FOR INTIMACY IN PRAYER

    When you trusted Jesus you entered the closest relationship with God possible. You became a child in the family of One who is Father. As God’s child you are invited to come to him with every need and joy. Scripture is filled with wonderful reassurances that prayer is not a spiritual exercise performed according to easily-broken rules, but the reaching of a child to its Father … a Father lovingly eager to hear.

    COME TO GOD AS LORD

    PSALM 77:10–14

    Then I thought, To this I will appeal: the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand. I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds. Your ways, God, are holy. What god is as great as our God? You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples.

    2 CHRONICLES 20:6

    And said: LORD, the God of our ancestors, are you not the God who is in heaven? … Power and might are in your hand, and no one can withstand you.

    PSALM 89:5–8

    The heavens praise your wonders, LORD, your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones. For who in the skies above can compare with the LORD?     LUKE 11:1–4

He said to them, When you pray, say: ‘Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.’ "

    ROMANS 8:14–17

    For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs — heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

    GALATIANS 3:26; 4:4–6

    So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith … God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba, Father."
