INTRODUCTION
Did you know that you are in a war engaged against an invisible enemy? In fact, we all are.We can’t see it or touch it, but it’s there. It approaches you on the Internet, in the hall at school, on the television screen. The enemy is Satan, the devil, and he is real and powerful. But the good news of the Bible is that we have the covering
— the full armor of God—an impenetrable barrier against which the fiery darts of the evil one are powerless.
One of the most inescapable realities of the Christian worldview is that we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places
(Ephesians 6:12). Amazon.com now lists more than 500 titles on spiritual warfare, and Google displays over 1,000,000 references to Christian spiritual warfare
. It appears that people everywhere are thinking a great deal about spiritual warfare these days. The good news is that God has a plan to protect you from evil in the spiritual battles in your life.
Adapted from the highly regarded book, The Covering, this study guide explains that we dare not overestimate the power of the devil, and God has given us the tools for victory. In this 8-week study, you will learn how to put on the full armor of God so that you will be intimately acquainted with each piece of the armor and its effectiveness in your life. The victory is yours for the taking!
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
—Ephesians 6:10–17 (NIV)
