About this ebook

Syl Gordon just wants the perfect career and she thinks she's found it. What could be easier than collecting plant specimens, even if she has to be a little deceptive about it? The jewel-eyed chancellor at The Simjul Research Institute seems to have fully accepted her less than truthful reason for being there. Now all she has to do is stay out of the way of temptation, and find her target specimen.

Jarek Mariltar has dealt with competitors anxious to learn more about his research, and friends anxious to find him a mate, but he has never before encountered anyone like Syl. He knows the accident-prone, fashion-conscious female is a fraud. He just can't figure out who might have sent her. And he must protect the rare plant specimen from her amateur attempts to retrieve it at all costs.

Someone is manipulating them, but neither has a clue. They know they shouldn't be spending so much time together, but they can't seem to help themselves, nor can they refute their growing feelings for one another despite a relationship rooted in deception.

To my brother, who took us on a walk around Trillium Lake one early summer's day and taught my children the names of all the wildflowers.

    chapter 1

Syl Gordon wriggled. She jerked and squirmed. She squeezed her eyes shut, gritted her teeth and let herself go limp. Nothing helped. Her body didn't budge one nanopel. Her brand new perfect career had just become hung up on a giant tree.

She had no idea how it had happened. One nan she was strolling down a perfectly safe-looking path, the next she was attached to the enormous trunk. Now--a hanan later--she was still stuck despite her best efforts, and was fairly sure she had missed that all-important first meeting. Nor had she seen a soul since she'd passed through the enormous gates of The Simjul Research Institute.

The decision to walk because it was such a beautiful day and the institute's grounds so stunningly beautiful was, in retrospect, a poor one. Like so many of her decisions. Had anyone missed her yet? Would anyone even bother to look for her? If she were her employer, she'd probably politely suggest she find other employment. This job had sounded so interesting and she'd been so certain she could make it work. Being stuck like an insect on a gantweb was not part of the plan.

Her father would laugh and assure her better things were in her future.

Her mother would stifle a sigh and try not to look dismayed.

Her brothers and sisters... Her eyes flew open and she renewed her struggles. She really didn't want to think about the reaction from her over-achieving siblings.

    If her twin...

A small, red insect scuttled across a fan of fallen leaves toward her left foot.

    Her mind blanked.

Two more little red insects darted in pursuit of the first. The three congregated right at the toe of her amethyst temptation crossover shoe. At the beginning of the day, the shoes had seemed a perfect match for her new outfit acquired to celebrate her new career. Now, with one shoe garnering interest from creatures whose intent was unclear, they didn't seem like such a perfect choice, especially since they exposed more skin than they protected.

More insects appeared. The tiny red puddle at her foot expanded. A soft hiss rose in the warm, humid air accompanied by an increasingly noxious odor. The puddle ebbed and flowed.

Since a miracle might have occurred in the last ten nans, Syl sent a hasty petition to the gods that they not let her fall and end up with little red spots smashed all over her fashionable pale purple tunic, and tried to launch herself forward again. Something ripped somewhere in her clothing, but her body remained glued to the tree.

An ever-growing colony of smelly insects now almost completely surrounded both her shoes.

    How had this happened?

    Watcha doin'?

Eek. The surprised shriek left Syl's mouth before she could stop it. A human had appeared from nowhere and stood planted at the fringe of the red puddle. As humans went, it was very small. A midget. No, on closer inspection, it appeared to be a child. A very dirty one.

    Syl knew nothing about children.

Buried under layers of muck, this one could be male or female. She decided on male since she was certain a girl would never tolerate being in such a deplorable state.

The midget child peeled back his lips, revealing a wide gap in his teeth. He popped a grubby digit in his mouth and contemplated her with sapphire eyes as big as bam-stones.

Reluctant to take her eyes off her best chance at rescue yet, Syl slid her gaze as fast as she could first in the direction in which she'd been headed, then in the direction from which she'd come. Ignorant she might be about pre-pubescents, but a child this small would surely be in the company of an adult. Deliverance had to be at hand. Problem was, she couldn't see anyone in either direction on the fused metalplat-paved, narrow trail, which wound its way through tall, feathery, silver-green fronds and
