About this ebook
Clearing up the myths about hypnosis and presenting scientific research documenting its efficacy, this guide explains what hypnosis is and how it can be used to treat more than 50 common health problems, including chronic pain, sleep disorders, smoking cessation, asthma, obesity, and headaches. Hypnosis works as a healing, anesthetic, and pain-management tool, providing real, measurable health benefits to patients either on its own or in conjunction with other therapies and treatments. In addition, patients who learn and practice self-hypnosis are able to reduce their healthcare costs, prevent symptom relapses, take fewer medications, and make fewer emergency room visits. This book includes information on specific health issues for which hypnosis has been proven to be effective, including issues related to pregnancy and childbirth; up-to-date studies than demonstrate the results that can be achieved, including how it can benefit children; an appendix with resources for ongoing research; and a glossary of terms.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book was well written and explains the concept of hypnosis quite well. It reiterates the benefits of hypnosis. I was a bit disappointed, not in the quality of writing or conveyance of ideas, but in the type of information given. This book felt more to me like the author was trying to sell the concept of hypnosis to those who were on the fence about trying it. I already knew the techniques of hypnosis and the many types of benefits, so I felt the content to be somewhat lacking for my knowledge base. I would not recommend this book to someone who already has a good deal of knowledge on hypnosis. I would, however, recommend it to someone who is new to the concept and wants to learn more about the subject.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5The first section of the book covers what hypnosis is and is not, clarifying common misconceptions. The second part of the book rehashes the same story over and over again. Someone has an ailment, and hypnosis helps. It was an utter waste of time. We get it, hypnosis can help with a variety of ailments, you don't have to cover each one in detail. The entire second portion of the book could have been summed up in a single chapter. If you're going to write a whole book about hypnosis, give the reader something they can use. There were no tips on self-hypnosis nor were there any scripts to try out at home. It was a disappointment.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This book offers a lot of basic facts about hypnosis: How it does and doesn’t work (no Manchurian Candidates or suddenly thinking you’re a chicken because you hear the word “drumstick”), guided hypnosis, self-hypnosis, how to find a good hypnotist, and a whole raft of physical and mental ailments hypnosis has been used to treat. What it doesn’t offer is any practical application for these principles outside of a clinical setting, which I found to be a profoundly disappointing. Certainly, there’s a section about asthma or insomnia, but instead of a “here’s what you can do about it” approach, the author instead summarizes the existing research findings, offers a case study drawn from his own life, and moves briskly on to the next condition. If we’ve come that far in the book, we are on board with the idea that hypnosis is an effective treatment. The research summaries don’t tell us anything beyond that, and come across as pedantic. If you are new to the concept of hypnosis or skeptical about its health applications, you might get something out of this book. Btu if you are looking for a hands-on guide to managing your own health through hypnosis, you would be better served to keep looking.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very understandable and the author does a wonderful job of explaining the science involved. I think it is something I might try myself and will recommend the book to anyone who is searching for answers to their medical difficulties.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I like a lot about this book.1. The author shares his personal use of hypnosis for weight loss and gives reasoning (and lots of research citations, thank you!) behind his choice of imagery for patients. It helped me to understand the process and how a cue can actually work for someone. Reading the explanations in the case studies helped me to feel like I know what to expect in an appointment now.2. The book is divided well and logically for me as a novice. For each medical issue (chronic pain, arthritis, headaches, etc., Lewis briefly summarizes some of the research about hypnosis treatment, a case study is often featured that describes how a patient of his benefited from hypnosis, and then a little summary about why hypnosis is a reasonable treatment on its own or in conjunction with other treatments. There is also a section devoted to other medical issues (tinnitus, etc.) with shorter summaries, a glossary, great notes section, and resources for locating a trustworthy hypnotist and what to expect from her/him.3. Something very cool in this book was the addition of a "for children" section. He often referred to children specifically in a section to talk about the benefits to them and how treatment is handled.4. It's very straightforward and gives the right amount of text. It's not too vague. I don't have to know the science behind establishing a relaxation cue, but I understand the concept well now and understand the science behind the studies of hypnosis thanks to this book.5. It makes me want to become a hypnotist! The book conveys his passion for his work and his many years of experience, which is always refreshing.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book is very well organized. And the goal of explaining misconceptions of hypnosis was met. I enjoyed the case studies and the history of hypnosis was interesting. For myself I was curious about self-hypnosis. I have a friend who suffers with Fibromyalgia I think this book might help her with this problem.
