About this ebook

The wisdom and spirituality of Hawaiian elders is a facet of Hawaiian culture that outsiders rarely see or truly understand. New Age veteran Sondra Ray and her personal guide, Auntie Pua, act as messengers of the Aloha spirit, sharing the sacred teachings of the Kahunas — the “transmitters of secrets” — through kitchen-table style storytelling and first-hand adventures. The ancient rituals and basic tenets of the Huna way — loving oneself, nurturing other beings and the land, and living in harmony with all of life — provide a powerful code of transformation, leading to a deeper spiritual life more in tune with the rhythms of the natural world. By identifying the three core selves present in everyone, and in coordinating the way the three selves interact, readers learn to control their own reality — this is the Huna Way.

Introduction

I guess I was born a healer at some level because when my grandfather saw me at birth, he never went back to the mental institution. I also remember visiting the sick and poor people in our little town on my tricycle. It was inevitable, then, that when my father became ill and began going in and out of hospitals, my inclinations turned to studying nursing. I wanted to know why people in my town were getting sick and dying. Back then, we kids attended every funeral of every person who died in our neighborhood. School was even let out so that we could march the three miles out to the cemetery.

When I watched people I loved being put in the ground, I didn’t understand why the church said, The Lord took them away. I couldn’t bear thinking that God killed people. So I started a mission early; I had to find out the truth about sickness and death. When my own father died the night before my graduation, and the whole town was crying when I gave a speech to accept my honors, you might say that was the final blow.

I rebelled against my family’s religious leanings and married an atheist. But my desire to serve rose again when I heard President Kennedy make his famous speech about the Peace Corps. I told my husband we had to join. Unable to resist my enthusiastic zeal, he agreed and the two of us went through the very tough training. When we finally boarded the plane to Peru, we were told during take-off that President Kennedy had just been assassinated. We were numb. But there was no time to grieve when we landed, as Peru was suffering from an epidemic—the plague. The Peace Corps put me through a real boot camp for world service. I knew I would never be the same.

During graduate school I began to embrace my powers, which wreaked havoc on my marriage and ultimately left me divorced and devastated. I joined the Air Force Nurse Corps during the Vietnam War, but I was already so wounded that I just ended up in therapy.

One day my ex-husband called to say he wanted me back. I thought, maybe that is it. I should try again. I packed all my things and sent them to him in
