Ordinary Woman Extraordinary Circumstance Part 3 - Sid Allcorn

    C2008-903871-1

    Prologue

One of the things I should mention is the power that I felt from God through His involvement with me as I wrote the story. In the epilogue I made mention of a couple of things that He managed to do. At the beginning of the book I became aware of His overall concern for Julia and Colin and tried to involve Him in the story. I made a definite rule to not have Him speak as is the case with the movies. I felt that having Him speak would be a shame. I preferred to not have Him in any shape or form become another character in the story because it seemed to me that I should make Him special. I hope that as you read the story you will arrive at the same conclusion as I did. I have tried to make part 3 as active as possible because it seems as if everything I read talks about activity in your own story. The death of a main character is also something that you will encounter and its effect on Julia. I trust that you will enjoy the story and look forward to creating a book for part 4 which should actually culminate in Julia and Colin leaving it up to young people to carry on. I purposely left out any connections to geography of the situation especially the cottage that they ended up in and in doing this I hope that I opened up possibilities for the reader to supply by themselves. Similarly I left out some references to Julia and Colin that would tie them down to be more subject to interpretation

    Chapter 1

    When faced with setbacks, rest assured that they are indicators of positive progress toward your goal.Book of Life {XII: 2}

WHEN HE OPENED HIS EYES, saw the bright sun and felt the warmth after a_long winter, he could almost forget the warning they had given him two days ago that this would be the day he died. He tried to eat his breakfast but his mom knew something was wrong and tried to find out what it was.

Ben, what's wrong? It's a beautiful day and you don't seem to be very happy. Is there anything you want to talk about? When your father comes down, would you like to talk with him?

No, I'm fine. He was really worried about what was going to happen but there didn't seem to be any sense in telling anybody now.

Finally, his mother changed the subject. Gosh, you're 17, in your last year of high school, and heading off to university in the fall. The time just flies by. He really felt a mixture of emotions as he headed off to school, knowing that his mom and dad were worried about him. Ben had always been truthful with them, and felt badly about not sharing with them now.

Unlike many families that had little or no communication, Ben and his parents shared a lot. They would have liked to have had more. Both of Ben's parents were retired from teaching. Both had said goodbye to their parents and were in their early sixties. Ben was kind of a late bloomer.

The second he turned the corner, there they were: all three of them, each bigger than he was and ready to kill him. He didn't want to die just yet but he didn't know if he had a chance.

Hey Ben, how come so many books? Doing homework again? Didn't we tell you we didn't like you doing that? As usual they began by pushing him around a bit. And like before, they were careful about not hitting him anywhere that would show.

Boom, boom, and boom; he could feel his heart starting to count the seconds in his chest. Ben tried not to pay any attention to what they were shouting or doing, as they tried to hurt him as much as possible without leaving any marks on him that he could use to prove he'd been beaten up.

Ben knew he shouldn't have taken the shortcut behind the mall but he felt that it was important to face this rather than run away. There would probably be the same three guys meeting up with him. They were older than Ben and yet seemed immature. The self-appointed leader always did the talking. The group dressed pretty much alike, with their oversized baggy pants, chains hanging down and rings everywhere. All three were taller than Ben, who was slender, dressed well and had handsome features.

He noticed a bunch of kids gathering around, and they appeared to enjoy watching him get his just reward for being a bright kid in school who worked too hard for his marks. They were all very jealous.

But Ben had been preparing for this day. He had spent a lot of time studying and practising the art and discipline of Taekwondo. He knew that it was important for them to think, like always, that they had nothing to fear from any efforts he might make: a big mistake on their part.

The boys had pushed Ben to the ground and when he looked up; Ben could see the faces behind the windows watching a fight that was more realistic than anything they could get on TV, even on high-definition. He had a quick idea that if only one person would help him, he would be okay.

Ben often wondered why they had chosen him. He had even asked them but only got an answer like, Hey, we got lots like you, so don't feel special. You see, we got it figured out, like a lot of great men got it figured out. When you find that others are going to have more money and more of everything you won't ever have, then what you do is bring them down to your level and then eliminate them. When you consider men and women that were assassinated, it's because they were so good and we were so bad that there has to be a reckoning and levelling up.

Ben often thought about this and was impressed with their rational thinking, but thought that it was a shame that it was so negative.

Usually, the bullies got tired of this game but today they seemed intent on really hurting him with the kicks and yells. The crowd was getting larger, which was unfortunately encouraging his assailants to put on a really good show.

He'd tried to tell his homeroom teacher about this but she hadn't believed him, and Mom and Dad didn't think anything the school system did was any good anyway.

It wasn't so much that nobody cared; after all, both his parents were teachers. It was more that the minority of people who committed such violent acts — those who lacked a conscience — were hard to contain.

In each World War, only a few people ran the show and committed terrible atrocities because of the apathy and false sense of security. But now the public is more aware of what is happening and hopefully, these same men can no longer get away with such brutal crimes, although we still have a few trying. Every new excuse for some to get away with hurting others becomes a measure of success for the evil doings of mankind.

The only one who had listened to Ben had been someone who was also taking the same Taekwondo course he was taking.

    Boom, boom, boom.

Okay, that's enough. The kicks were getting too hard and frequent. This was the moment he'd hoped wouldn't come but it was time for him to take control of the situation. He suddenly sprung off the ground like a rock from a catapult. He'd learned, in the course, how to surprise the attackers.

Oh boy, Ben is going to fight back! Wow, this should be a lot of fun! One of the gang members uttered these words when suddenly he was hit in the back so hard that he lay on the sidewalk, unable to breath let alone talk. What had hit him?

The leader of this little group of three gave the impression when he spoke that he was quite intelligent. His name was Howie. The other two, Bernie and Roger, seemed to be the opposite — in fact, they were just followers. They were a little older than Ben, having repeated and dropped out.

Boom, boom, boom went his heart but now with a strength he had never felt before. He had decided, if he wanted to live, that this was his only way: to fight back.

He ducked, rolled, and was like something that had just been let out of a cage. No one in the crowd offered any help. They were enjoying it too much.

Then suddenly Howie had a knife. Ben didn't know if he should continue or run away as fast as he could. Just as he was pondering his next move, a foot caught Howie and the knife went flying through the air. Ben thought at last
