Chapter One
INTRODUCTION
My name is Wayne. My friends call me Duke, because I’m a fan of John Wayne’s old movies. I’m currently living in New York City, where I’m attending boarding school. Although I’ve been happy at school, I also share a bit of wanderlust--often daydreaming about what it would be like to live the good life on a tropical island with sandy beaches and blue-green water in which to swim.
This year, when it was time for our school’s Spring Break, my continuing daydream finally came true. My grandparents surprised me on my birthday with an all-expense paid trip to the beautiful island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas!
Needless to say, during my last few days of classes prior to flying to Eleuthera, I found myself daydreaming about my upcoming vacation. When the school finally closed down, I rushed to my dorm to pack for an early flight the next morning. Understandably, I had a hard time falling asleep because my mind kept focusing on what the next two weeks would bring.
Chapter Two
ELEUTHERA
Shortly after I arrived in Eleuthera, I was walking along the beach and stumbled on what I assumed was a rock. I was surprised, however, to hear a voice exclaim, Watch out, you big lummox, you just about stepped on me!
I looked down and was shocked to discover a two-foot tall elf at my feet, immaculately dressed like a proper Englishman—complete with an umbrella!
I knelt down to meet the elf on more common ground. I apologize for intruding,
