Duck shooting over the Pond
My first shots at ducks in the UK were memorable. Noted sporting bird artist David Hagerbaumer and I were near Inverness. We were there for several days of rough shooting and a day of driven pheasants. On our first day, one of rough shooting, we did well. We bagged pheasants, snipe, woodpigeons, grey partridges and a couple of rabbits.
At the conclusion of the day, as it was quickly growing dark, the gamekeeper asked if we would like to try for teal on a small marsh. Dave and I looked at each other in total surprise. We had never shot at ducks in darkness. We both had multiple chances, went through a lot of shells and didn’t touch a feather. Dave later speculated that hitting those teal in the dark was among the most impossible things he had attempted. I concurred.
