I really enjoyed this book, which is saying something since I've never been much of a horror fan. But this book was so much more than just a horror book -it was about a family pulling together to survive in a world gone wrong; A mother who loses her husband and has to learn how to cope, and how to be a single parent; a teenage daughter, coming of age in a time where the survival of humanity is uncertain; and a young boy who only wants to go home.This book felt very real and that's what made it so hard to put down. And what made it so -I wont say scary- more like unsettling to read. Especially reading it in bed late at night, staying up until the wee hours of the morning just to read...that...last...page. Because I had to know what happened next. Matthew Costello's style of writing is so natural, I felt like I was watching the story instead of reading it. It just flowed, and obviously kept me hooked. My only complaint would be that, without reading the preceding book in the series, I was a little confused about what was going on until I had read quite a bit into the book, so a little re-hashing of the events at the beginning would have definitely made things clearer for me, and for anyone else who might read the series out of order. Still, it was a really good read, and I'll be keeping an eye out for more Matthew Costello books in the future.
