He began writing poetry when he was in his senior year of high school (1970). During his college years, his writing picked up. He entered several poetry contests.
In 1972, he was given the name Rasul. Rasul is an Arabic name, and it means one who cares for people. He was given that name because of his sensitivity. He worked with students with special needs for thirty-five years.
Rasul would often write poems upon requests. People would share their feelings, and he would turn them into poetry. Rasul did have two of his poems published in a book called Contemporary Poets of America (1979); it is a Dorrance anthology. Rasul has written a variety of poems. And because of this variety, he has given many poetry readings through the years, e.g., readings for Black History Month and special education workshops.
Rasul believes that poetry is the song of the soul, and we all have a song inside of us.view less
