During her teaching career she worked with traditionally underserved students of poverty, first on the Tulalip Indian Reservation, and then with children of migrant workers in an agricultural area. Those experiences, coupled with her intense interest in what motivates kids to learn and succeed is what spurred her to write this book.view less
