Complex crime thriller - the third in the DC Morgan series.

This story follows two interconnected cases and a cold case. DC Ffion Morgan is investigating the death of a female estate agent found in the Awen River inside a kayak while on a work trip in Wales. DS Leo Brady, Ffion's boyfriend, is working on another series of crimes on The Hill. Residents living on The Hill have lots of secrets behind the doors of those opulent homes in the area’s most highly desired post code in Cheshire. They may be wealthy, but they definitely don’t have everything. Recently they’ve suffered a rash of home burglaries and an old, unsolved murder also happened there.

This novel was quite cleverly plotted and, although there were a lot of characters, each seemed individual and well developed. There's more information about the relationship between Ffion and Leo. His ex wife, Allie, a wanna be member of the clique on The Hill, is also involved peripherally in the goings on. The author blends mystery and humor with a bit of social commentary as well. It all comes together with a satisfying conclusion.

I like crime thrillers and police procedurals because I like the details about the investigation process and the realistic pursuit of a criminal. The author does a great job describing the police work. The inclusion of the true crime podcast demonstrates the popularity of that media as well as how it affects the cold case inquiry. I enjoy the interaction between Ffion and Leo and their developing personal bonds. Although this could be read as a standalaone, I think it is more enjoyable having read the previous books and knowing the backstory. I'm looking forward to the next installment in this excellent series.

I was able to listen to the audio book while also following along in the e-book ARC, both provided by the publishers. The narrators, Chloe Angharad Davies, Joe Eyre, and Penelope Rawlins, were amazing. Their accents and flawless Welsh made the story more authentic. I was quite glad to have the book text in front of me at times, however, as delivery is fast. The cast created a great immersive listening experience and enhanced my enjoyment of the book.

Detective Constable Ffion Morgan returns for her third case. She is still living in Cwn Coed, the village in North Wales where she had grown up. The village is situated very near the border with England, and her local force works closely with the neighbouring Cheshire constabulary in England, although there are frequent clashes over which force should have jurisdiction over individual cases.

Ffion has been hoping to buy a flat so that she can moved out of the cramped rental accommodation that she currently shares with Dave, her highly flatulent and behaviourally challenged mongrel dog. This is now becoming urgent as her lease will expire in a couple of weeks, but the estate agent who is managing her offer on the flat she has opted for is now not returning her calls. Her relationship with Leo Brady, now a sergeant in the rival Cheshire force, has been going well, and he is keen for her to move in with him. Ffion, for whom the glass is ‘never half empty but bone dry and being used as an ashtray’ is reluctant to risk such a precipitous change.

Ffion finds herself investigating the apparently suspicious death of an estate agent whose body is found in a kayak that had washed away from the local lakeside resort. Meanwhile, Leo is looking into a series of burglaries in a prosperous and exclusive property development on the fringes of Chester. There is an added complication for him in that his ex-wife lives literally around the corner, and has been aspiring (with little success) to be accepted as part of the community.

As always, Clare Mackintosh writes very engagingly, and draws the reader into the novel immediately. Ffion is a great character – conscientious in her pursuit of a murderer, although far from rigorous in her relationship with formal protocol. She also has a great fund of frequently injudicious but also very funny responses to people who annoy her.

    All very enjoyable.

Third book in the DC Morgan series. Ffion is investigating a body found in a kayak while Boyfriend Leo is investigating a burglary in an upscale neighborhood.

This was a fun, quick read. I didn’t read the first book but had no issues following the storyline in books two and three. I enjoyed the MCs and their relationship challenges. Allie (the ex) is such an annoying but fun character showing desperation and social climbing at its best/worst. Short chapters a plus. I did find the introduction of so many characters, along with the naming of houses in the toney neighborhood, a little overwhelming and hard to keep straight. There was a chart at the beginning but I didn’t find it very helpful, especially since I was reading on my kindle and had to go back and forth from the picture taken on my phone. This was a nice distraction from my thrillers and I look forward to see what’s next for this duo.

Thanks to Little Brown Book Group UK and NetGalley for this ARC. This is my honest opinion.
