About this audiobook
Marsh meant to turn down York’s offer. It was too full of secrets that spelled danger. But the promise of both gold and a grand new boat that could make history crushed his resolve—coupled with the terrible force of York’s mesmerizing gaze. Not until the maiden voyage of his new sidewheeler Fevre Dream would Marsh realize he had joined a mission both more sinister, and perhaps more noble, than his most fantastic nightmare...and mankind’s most impossible dream.
Here is the spellbinding tale of a vampire’s quest to unite his race with humanity, of a garrulous riverman’s dream of immortality, and of the undying legends of the steamboat era and a majestic, ancient river.

One of the best books about the vampire genre that I have read to date. It has that classic essence, bloody moments, and impeccable narration. (Translated from Spanish) - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

The Mississippi River flows, blood flows, nature, fantasy, the description that makes the atmosphere (especially the nocturnal) eerie, unfolds.
Human beings and others roam freely aboard this steamship, as ostentatious as it is cursed.
Inevitable for this "creator of worlds" to escape the vampiric influence.
An exceptional treatment, a management that delights the imagination, that feeds the story with breathtaking scenes.
It is not just another book about vampirism; it is more than a book about vampirism.
If observed closely, there, in the depths, there is an indelible mark of two things that have fueled this world for centuries: violence and history.
Issues that perhaps would be better left alone... like the "dream of Fevre."
It is not enough to change the names. (Translated from Spanish) - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

A book that has kept me hooked from beginning to end. Where Martin demonstrates that he is a top-notch writer, with a rhythm and narrative style that captivates. With him, we travel along the Mississippi River in the mid-19th century, where the Southern landscape and its historical moment (slavery, the proximity of the Civil War, river transport…) intertwine in an exciting story of friendship, challenges, dark secrets, and loyalty. And yes, it is a vampire story. And a good one.
Firstly, there are the characters. Very well-crafted, with their moments of glory and their nuances. And here Martin shows that he was born with a gift for creating them and making the reader love and hate them equally. Just as he did in his ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ saga, Martin is able to show both the good and the bad sides of each character. To make you love a character in one chapter and then hate them with all your might in the next, and vice versa. Giving them memorable scenes that you will remember for a long time and suffering every time the author punishes them without mercy.
And with all this, a complex plot forms with many twists and turns. One of those where, halfway through the book, you think it’s about to end and something just doesn't add up. One of those that makes you put your hands on your head and scream “Oh my God!”. Where, in the end, if you analyze it, the fact that there are vampires in the story adds a very cool fantastic element. But, in reality, it’s not just about them, but about the relationships and commitments that bind the characters and the challenge of placing loyalty above personal desires.
A brilliant novel that I recommend and that has left me with such a good taste that I will have to read something else by Martin. I had no intention of doing so after the small disappointment of ‘Dying of the Light’. My friend Xesc has already recommended ‘Tuf Voyaging’ to me, and it is noted on my reading list. If you have other recommendations by this author, I’m all ears. Martin, with all due respect, stop with the nonsense and finish the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ saga! FIRST WARNING. A breath of fresh air for vampire literature, although it wouldn't be entirely accurate to label it that way, because for the most part it is an endearing book about ships, reflecting the author’s entire passion for this subject.
Set in the southern United States in the mid-19th century, it allows the reader a glimpse into the world of the great riverboats that dominated passenger and cargo transport. The narration is well-structured; the plot at times slows down but generally flows very well; the characters are well characterized and the ending meets the expectations of a book of this kind.
Hopefully we can find more of these gems in the forthcoming bibliography of this prolific author. (Translated from Spanish) - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5

Mr. Martin gives us a book about vampires, but also about ships, rivers, and a lot of vegetation. I think he dwells a lot, way too much on the small details, and that’s the part I didn't like at all, as it feels lengthy. Then the vampire story I liked a lot, and the characters in general are very well done. But I'm back to the same point; I think he stretches the story too much. One of my favorite authors and a great book without a doubt. Set in a 19th-century Mississippi river, where the alliances, fears, desires, and frustrations of vampires are not very different from those of humans. The story captivates you from start to finish, with George Martin's unique narrative touch. Recommended if you want to read about vampires that don’t shine beautifully. A novel that begins as an adventure on a riverboat and makes you wonder if it's really a horror story…until it arrives. The best vampire story I've read since Stoker's unbeatable one, and I apologize to all the fans of Polidori, le Fanu, Rice, Shepard, etc. (Translated from Spanish) - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

A novel that invites reflection on how the "other" is constructed. Set in 1850 amidst the rise and subsequent fall of steamships on the Mississippi River, permeated by the conflicts between northern abolitionists and southern slaveholders in the United States. Is an alliance between humans and vampires possible? This is the question posed by the author as we travel aboard the luxurious Dream of Fevre, the largest and fastest steamship on the river. An excellent novel that encourages thought, with an intense and enjoyable pace, some political doses, and good literary nods to the romantic poets. (Translated from Spanish)
