About this audiobook
The first book in an action–packed new SF adventure series. Vulcan is a factory planet, centuries old, Company run, ugly as sin, and unfeeling as death. Vulcan breeds just two types of native — complacent or tough. Sten is tough. When his family is killed in a mysterious accident, Sten rebels, harassing the Company from the metal world’s endless maze-like warrens. He could end up just another burnt–out Delinquent. But people like Sten never give up.
Author
Allan Cole
Allan Cole is a best-selling author, screenwriter and former prize-winning newsman who brings a rich background in travel and personal experience to his imaginative work. Son of a CIA operative, Cole was raised in the Middle East, Europe, and the Far East. He attended thirty-two schools and visited or lived in as many countries. He recalls hearing Othello for the first time as a child sitting on an ancient fortress wall in Cyprus - the island Shakespeare had in mind when he wrote the play. Rejecting invitations to join the CIA, Cole became an award-winning investigative reporter and editor who dealt with everything from landmark murder cases to thieving government officials. Since that time he’s concentrated on books and film. His novels include the landmark science fiction series, “Sten,” the highly-praised fantasy trilogy, “Tales Of The Timuras,” “The Far Kingdoms” series, a World Fantasy Award Finalist, and the Vietnam war classic, “A Reckoning For Kings.” The “Sten” novels, which he coauthored with the late Chris Bunch, have sold upwards of 25 million books worldwide and have been published in 13 languages. His latest novels include “The Lords Of Terror,” which he wrote with Russian fantasy master, Nick Perumov, as well as “MacGregor,” and “Drowned Hopes,” thrillers set in Boca Raton, Florida. “Lords” is the first and only novel written by American and Russian collaborators. Allan has sold more than a hundred and fifty television dramas, ranging from “Quincy” and “The Rockford Files” to and “Walker, Texas Ranger.” He lives in Boca Raton, Florida, with his wife, Kathryn. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Interesting premise for the story in the series. Good development for the civilization. But I thought that a lot of the story was written very chaotically and I found it very difficult to follow the jumps from scene to scene in the audiobook.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5It was ok at the start and got more and more cartoon-like every section
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It's Pretty Woman & Oliver Twist smashed together and shoved into a Dystopian SciFi mold that morphs into Military SciFi
I actually enjoyed the story. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5There are not many writers who can mix great writing style with creative concepts. Bunch seems to be one of those authors. "Sten" is a scattering of interesting (new to me) concepts of where high tech will bring us in the future (one of these concepts are really fascinating/creepy) all tied together into a great story. Bunch's style reminds me of Harry Harrison but has a better eye for detail when exploring how new tech could work.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I enjoyed it I’m very pleased to see that there is more books now all I can say is I’m looking forward to book 2
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I bought this book because I couldn't find anything else remotely interesting at the bookstore and I generally like action sci-fi book. Its is a great action book, however, I was suprised at how good the writting was especially during "down time" and character development. These areas are usually a little lacking in this kind of book. All in all I found the books writing to be great and the story to be well balanced between action and development. The plot and story line are quite good and interesting in their own right. The only slight problem I had is that there are often large jumps forward in time that I didn't notice right away and had to go back to find out what was really going on. Not a big deal really. I think this is a great book for people who like sci-fi adventures! Plus, there are sequels.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A solid start to a modern space opera. The Sten series was one of my first introductions to the realistic military Sci-Fi which has become more prominate in recent years. More than most series, this series should be started at the beginning. Sten provides much of the groundwork that the rest of the series uses as a jumping-off point.
