About this audiobook

Ernest Hemingway's first novel, "The Sun Also Rises," follows the adventures of a group of young, hard-drinking, American expatriates - which Hemingway refers to as the "Lost Generation" - as they pinball through Europe, from France to Spain and back again. Directionless, disillusioned and fueled by copious amounts of alcohol, narrator Jake Barnes takes the reader into the heart of 1920's Europe, particularly Paris and Pamplona (where the characters witness the infamous running of the bulls and Jake develops as fascination with bullfighting).

At once cynical and satiric, "The Sun Also Rises" was the first cry of a new literary voice that would come to dominate the first half of the 20th century.

The seminal novel from Nobel Prize winner Ernest Hemingway, the book appears here in its unabridged and original format.

As an expat, traveler, lost soul, this book read semiautobiographically. Each character a representation of people real to me. Joseph Wycoff nailed accents so smoothly, I felt I was standing in Communes in South Korea, or shouldering up at the swim up bar at Dreamland on Koh Pha Ngan. The listen was perfect for a double brew day, keeping me just entertained enough to root for Jake, fully knowing that Brett, like a few women I know, will never really ever be his. For a first book, it's a masterpiece of daring and intimacy, a time capsule of sentiment and culture. "And the driver cracked the whip." Imagine horse drawn carriage as the primary mode of transportation. To say the least I was disappointed that 2 words are bleeped out. You can't say this is unabridged and original if you sensor the reading. Don't tamper with the past or risk clouding what little view we have of it. Still, I can't recommend this book enough. But don't stop there. Read them all.

Joseph Wycoff gives an absolutely stunning performance of Hemingway's first novel. The listener feels that he is right there in the midst of the story. Highly recommended.

Fascinating as a study of Modernist lit and of the author but it also reads like a very mild car accident. The narrator did a fantastic job keeping me awake.
