Robert Louis Stevenson

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) was a Scottish poet, novelist, and travel writer. Born the son of a lighthouse engineer, Stevenson suffered from a lifelong lung ailment that forced him to travel constantly in search of warmer climates. Rather than follow his father’s footsteps, Stevenson pursued a love of literature and adventure that would inspire such works as Treasure Island (1883), Kidnapped (1886), Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), and Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes (1879).

The book draws you in with its immersive atmosphere and storytelling. The characters come to life because of the world building. I feel like I’m on the island.

I don’t know how many times I’ve read Treasure Island since childhood but every reread never fails to provide an enjoyable escape. The characters are so richly written and a plot with enough complexity to hold the imagination. It’s a shame that this book is seen as a children’s book, it easily brings its share of treasure for an adult to love!

The narrator did a great job with this audio version!

Pretty good! There were some minor issues with the recording - speaker hesitating before a few chapter numbers, sounds of page turning in the background, weird audio effects to simulate layered singing. But I really liked the distinct voices.

I’d been wanting to read this ever since I saw the movie Treasure Planet, a childhood favorite. It was really cool to see the source material in action - the plot and characters are very similar. It was a fun high seas drama with a satisfying conclusion, but the thing I missed a lot from this older tome is better representation for women? Call it a relic of the times or what you will, but the only prominent female character was portrayed as “greedy” and “weak” by the main character, so yuck.
