About this audiobook

Fellow at Ethic & Public Policy Center, scholar at The Institute for Human Ecology at CUA and the nationally best-selling author of the Theology of Home series, Carrie Gress argues that fifty years of radical feminism have had the opposite of the intended effect and have granted primacy of place to the traditionally male sphere of life, while simultaneously devaluing the typical attributes, virtues, and strengths of women.

This book appears to be at the forefront of a new movement of women intellectuals who have rejected modern feminism as being in contraiction to the biological and spiritual nature of women. The biographical account of the historical woman activists, writers and pre-internet influencers struggling for women’s rights provides a historical perspective. The book would also be useful for academic historians of the woman's movement. Reading this book helps us understand better the modern day attempt by activists to erase the concept of binary gender and the notion of womanhood. The take-away I got from this book was to confirm the profound influence of “The Feminine Mystique” by Betty Friedan published in 1963. That book put the nail in the coffin of the idea that women had a natural role as mothers, homemaker and nurturer of infants and children. What was interesting was to learn of the Communist underpinnings of Friedan’s book, that in effect prescribed the former Soviet Union’s recipe and model for the role of women under the Stalinist industrialization era. I learnt how “second wave feminism of the 60s and 70s focused on “smashing the patriarchy” i.e., was neo Marxist, ideologically. Nowadays in many countries men are allowed to marry men, and women marry women. This has profoundly changed the meaning of marriage in those countries. Where all this is headed in the future, who knows? This audiobook shows us how the feminist movement got us here, but not where it is currently headed, which is anyone’s guess.

Carrie Gress brings a fresh view about Feminism. Critical thinking is a blessing, it's what helps us evolve. Though I don't always agree with her views this is definitely a worthwhile reading.
