About this audiobook
"A genuine spiritual quest. . . . Extraordinary." — New York Times
Among the most profound and influential explorations of mind-expanding psychedelic drugs ever written, a complete classic book—The Doors of Perception —in which Aldous Huxley, author of Brave New World, reveals the mind's remote frontiers and the unmapped areas of human consciousness.
The Doors of Perception by Huxley blends Eastern mysticism with scientific experimentation to produce one of the most influential works on the effects of hallucinatory drugs on the human psyche.
Huxley’s essays The Doors of Perception ushered in a whole new generation of counter-culture icons such as Jackson Pollock, John Cage, Timothy Leary and Jim Morrison. In fact, Morrison’s band name The Doors was inspired by The Doors of Perception.
Aldous Huxley
Aldous Huxley (1894-1963) was a prominent and successful English writer. Throughout his career he wrote over fifty books, and was nominated seven times for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Huxley wrote his first book, Crome Yellow, when he was seventeen years old, which was described by critics as a complex social satire. Huxley was both an avid humanist and pacifist and many of these ideals are reflected in his writing. Often controversial, Huxley’s views were most evident in the best-selling dystopian novel, Brave New World. The publication of Brave New Worldin 1931 rattled many who read it. However, the novel inspired many writers, Kurt Vonnegut in particular, to describe the book’s characters as foundational to the genre of science fiction. With much of his work attempting to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western beliefs, Aldous Huxley has been hailed as a writer ahead of his time.

- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5He lost me when he mentioned the substance from the mexican plant having "significantly more mystical qualities" than ALCOHOL. I have never in my life seen an alcoholic and thought: "yes indeed, very spiritual human being, very mystical". It's the most dumbing substance in existence and the most widespread drug. We should have had over half this world's population as gurus if what he's implying is true. I had patience through a bit more but realized it's all a useless subjective interpretation of reality and then senseless philosophy and big words. Equating fasting, praying, and living a minimalistic ascetic lifestyle to something you can get through a pill "because there's chemical changes in the brain when these things are practiced" is another knee slapper. Sounds like a person who has not had a spiritual experience in his life. The author lived to see the 60's. It's 2024, where is the magical pill to heighten us spiritually? The author was religious, he researched spirituality, and instead of fasting and praying (the hard thing) and writing about his experience, he decided to write about magic pills (easy way out) that would do it for us in the future, so that him and his readers get another excuse not to work on themselves and seek actual spiritual growth. Could not finish this man's jibberish, stopped half-way through.
